Beware of UPS

Please beware of UPS. Their insurance doesn't mean much because they can just deny your claim, which is what just happened to me on a 4Runner part that they damaged.

It has been difficult trying to replace this item, so I just wanted to warn others. Anyone who has received a shipment from me knows that I am very careful in how I package my boxes. I spent a ton of time submitting information for their "investigation", and the buyer cooperated as well. It seems like they can always decide that an item wasn't packaged well enought... because of course that is why it was damaged - not the rough handling by UPS.

Some of these 4Runner parts we ship are extremely rare and not being manufactured any longer. Please be careful choosing your shipping company.

End of rant.

I worked for UPS for a while.... the way packages are handled... good lord. You're damn lucky anything shows up in good shape.

This is also what I have heard from other former ups employees. My buddy was telling me that there were times where employees would say "fragile? lets check" and then proceed to drop kick the package into the correct bin...

I've heard if you have a lawer contact ups for you, they pay up real quick. A lawsuit costs more than paying out the insurance.
Ups really likes dragging their feet with their inspection too.

Most of the time I send stuff no insurance, if something does happen I just eat it.

It was a cargo cover. The 2001-2002 version with the round end caps are hard to break, but the 1996-2000 version with the square end caps are more susceptible to damage. Knowing this I used two long boxes and double-boxed the cargo cover with plenty of padding to prevent breakage. The end caps (or bracket inserts) are made from a heavy duty plastic. The way this was packed UPS had to really try to break this item. The buyer said that the box was beat to hell when it arrived.

From this point forward I am removing the end caps from the cover (3 screws) and sending them separately - and of course not using UPS.

The amount of documentation and proof I provided to UPS for them to simply deny my claim was ridiculous. Why make the customer do all of that if you are just going to tell them that it wasn't UPS's fault?

USP really knows how to piss off their customers. They don't even refund the original shipping charge. Essentially I paid UPS money to break a somewhat rare item (that is no longer being manufactured) in order to make me find a replacement which costs even more money. What a joke!

That's piddly shit compared to the people who unloaded and loaded the trucks.

ship fedex or usps if you have to. im not going to say much more but choose wisely

As I mentioned in your sport hood shipping thread, these delivery drivers use bigger boxes that are in the floor of their truck as a step. I watch it happen on a regular basis. The smaller boxes are generally up on the shelving of the trucks and are not subjected to this.

I have also had to deal with insurance claims. Unless you get the added insurance, ups will only cover up to $100 (and that's IF you can get them to admit it's their fault for the damage). My work has their own outside insurance, so if UPS doesn't pay up, we're covered either way.

Sucks to hear though when you know you know you packed it right!

I always use my credit card to ship with any of the 3. I've had 2 problems and have always gotten my credit card to refund the money and let UPS deal with them and the CC's company always wins.

UPS Driver Caught Throwing Package, Urinating on Property : People.com

That said I have had some stellar UPS and Fed Ex drivers over the years when I worked in retail. I established a good rapport with them, knowing that an extra amount of civility from me usually went a long way. We even sent flowers to a UPS's driver's wife had twins once.

The loaders don't give a rats a$% about packages nor how they arrange them on the trucks.

I actually paid UPS with PayPal which is a good thing. PayPal has gone to bat for me before and never lost. They don't mess around. I am about to call PayPal on my lunch break. I am at least going to get the shipping charges disputed.

This is normal issue with all carriers. If you are scared it can get damaged when shipped than dont ship it. You need to make sure the package is as strong as a tank. Main reason I would never ship large items like hoods and fenders since they are delicate thin metal.

I know at least with fedex, it's protocol to deny the first insurance claim. If you resubmit it and challenge it, you have a better chance of them paying up

I wouldn't ship FedEx Ground either. I was a package handler for almost 6 yrs. The fragile packages got the same treatment as anything else. The conveyor/automated sorter could handle 150LB packages, so if your fragile one got stuck and a heavy one came in behind it, guess what, it got smashed.

I haven't had a bad package arrive from them yet... But have had a bad experience with there charges.

I ordered something where there was a 3-4$ over charge i was responsible for. They sent me a letter and because of my busy schedule I honestly forgot... Month later they sent me a notice they were going to send creditors after that amount with in days of non payment. I had no problem paying I just forgot. For them to go that far is kinda sad for 4$! Needless to say I sent them a cheque with a nice F you note attached to it. I avoid them if I can. They need to put more effort in there customer service and customer relations.

We need more delivery drivers like her that carries the packages to your door. :thumb:

Yeah, UPS has bad customer service and a crappy attitude. Last week I was at a UPS Store (before my insurance claim was denied) and tried to ship a box containing an air box/resonator tube and they gave me a quote of $48. I've sent this same item USPS for around $25, so I knew they were way off. UPS ssid that since my box was a cube and not rectangular it would cost more. Anyway, I took the same exact box to USPS and it was $24. Why would anyone pay UPS twice as much as USPS charges?

I've been a victim of FedEx breaking TWO cargo covers. They refunded me most of the cost of the most recent one, but I was still out $6 for my troubles. Basically, it cost me $6 to have them destroy the cargo cover.

I won't use UPS. Not only are they more expensive, they damage parts more often and won't refund your money. FedEx has broken 3 parts I have shipped, but they have refunded me most or all my money all 3 times very quickly and painlessly.

As for Cargo covers, I won't even ship them anymore. I make sure there is at least 6 inches packaging and it doesn't matter. They still find a way to break them.

The other major PITA is a lot of people seem to think shipping should be nearly free. I can't tell you the number of sales I lose because "Whoa shipping is expensive". Yep, it is! People often don't account for packaging.
