BFG 265/75/16 D load range no longer available???

Thanks. Yeah, the DuraTracs look pretty good (and a lot of people like them), but I decided they were too aggressive for my requirements (and sounds like they'll wear too fast with mostly on-road driving). I ended up buying some P265/75/16 Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armors. Pretty happy with them so far.

So yeah, total necrothread here... :banplease: :loco:

Funny how things come full-circle sometimes. I just ran across my thread here while researching some new tires, and decided an update would be appropriate.

So, to follow up on this soapbox rant, just yesterday, shortly after my '99 4Runner turned over 200k miles :thumb3: (less than 200 miles after), I had to replace the GY Silent Armors I had. :toilet3: My wife apparently ran over something getting on the highway, which took a 1/4" core of rubber out of the thread of the passenger rear tire, also taking a chunk of the steel belt with it and immediately deflating it. :wow2: :yell: She got well off of the road, and everyone was OK, thankfully.

The GY SA's had just over 31,000 miles on them, and were just shy of being completely worn out (5/32" left on all of them). I was pretty happy with them overall, but unfortunately they did wear fairly quickly (they had a 50k mile warranty, so I did receive about $75 back on the three which were not damaged). They didn't seem to have quite as good of traction as the previous BFG A/T KO, but they did do better in the heavy rain and slush.

I had been planning on trying the new BFG A/T KO2's next, but apparently they're pretty hard to get in the 265/75/16 size around here right now. Along with just about anything else locally at Discount Tire... :crybaby: So I wound up with the GY Wrangler Duratracs in the "E" load range. Certainly not my first choice, but not a bad option either for ~$500 out the door with the refunds on the other ones.

Guess we'll see how these do. I noticed pretty quickly that they felt a bit mushy, with a bit of side-to-side shimmy in the corners. When I got home, I noticed that they'd only inflated them to 37psi, which would likely explain it. I'm going to have to add 5-7psi to that and see if it makes a difference. If not, they might be going back. Lots of good reviews though, so maybe I'll have to give them a chance. Later.

Great reason to bring a thread back to the top. Thanks!!

Those new Duratracs may need just a little break-in time too before they're not "squirmy" anymore.

I was pretty miffed when BFG stopped making the 32s in the D range. Loved those tires on my '01 Tacoma; perfect match.

Currently driving myself crazy with the C vs D vs E scenario for my '08 V8 Runner with a 3/2 lift. Currently running BFG AT KOs in 265/70r17.

I'd really like to stay away from an E rated 33" tire, so I'm considering the General Grabber AT2s, but the only way they come with a D load range is on a 16" wheel. I don't do any serious offroading, but do some moderate trails and my driveway is a mess in the winter time.

I could probably buy the Grabbers and new 16" wheels for the price of 33" BFG ATs or even Duratracs.

Rumor has it that BFG is bringing out a BUNCH of new tire sizes for the KO2s in April 2015.

May have to wait and see.

Current setup.

I think you get a pass for resurrecting your own necropost though :D

It may also be that the differences between actual road handling between the C/D/E range is not as great any more with the new rubber compounds and better manufacturing that are being used these days.

Plus, they are having to support more and more tire sizes as well, becomes a pretty manufacturing and stocking nightmare.

I JUST recently switched from P-Metric to LT-E tires (BFG AT KO 2) with much concern. And frankly I can barely tell the difference on the road. All the worry was for nothing. Tires are quiet and not "harsh" at all at 45 pounds on the road. Looking at the load range guides, 42-45 is a good range for our runners empty and with a normal camping load. Offroad 45 IS a bit harsh but then so are P-Metrics at 35! Aired down to 30 the Es are nice and smooth again like the Metrics were at 20 and the feeling of all that rolling armor in an offroading situation is awesome. They are a little heavier, but the gained protection seems worth it.

Course if you are NOT offroading then the P-Metrics are still perfectly fine...
