So how many here have thought they blew a head gasket but have it turn out to be just a scare? My 96 Limited started acting funny in the past few days and it will run rough at idle only. Highway speed its nice and smooth as well as mid range speed. I have no smoke or toxic smelling fumes but Im losing coolant. The last code that popped up was a CYL misfire. I ran some injector cleaner through it and it cleared up up until the past few days where the stated started happening. I do have the CEL again but have yet to read it. Dip stick is not milky nor the radiator cap.
There is some coolant loss behind the engine in the heater plumbing but I didnt think it was substantial enough to lose as much as I did, maybe Im wrong.
The truck is on some very old oil (2000 over due service) and its currently sitting at roughly 205K.
Im very aware that it may indeed be a BHG, I just wanted to get some input from the board. I will be ordering a JDM Toyota Granvia engine around March.

You could have a misfire, which is why its running rough at idle. Drain the oil and see if it has any water in it.

I do have a misfire, it pulled a code last time I scanned it.

What was the code or codes?

What does your oil and coolant look like?

You said you were over due for an oil change, I would swap that out asap if you suspect it's a head gasket.

I had a similar scare, but I think I was just being a little girl and over reacting. Either way it's something you want to look into asap if you are showing symptoms of an blown head gasket. You can also buy a block tester like I did and check for combustion gasses in the cooling system. I'm not sure if you can borrow that tool but you may be able to from some places. A good cheap place to start though is a compression/leak down test if you have the tools.
