Best bet for camping will proabably be big pine campground or Holcomb valley. Highly doubt you snag a yellowpost.
Remember the trails you don’t want to be on I posted earlier, all the difficult trails are clearly labeled at the beginning, most trails in my collection are the more difficult ones because all the easy roads would really clutter up the map

Agreed. A few weeks ago I went up early Thursday morning, left San Diego at 4am and all the Yellow Posts were taken. It seems that if you want them for a weekend you need to find someone to grab one on Tuesday or Wednesday and then hand it off to a friend for Fri/Sat/Sun.
As it starts to cool off big time up there you'll be able to find one on a Thursday or Friday, but there are only a few short weeks between cold temps and then snow (if we get rain this year I guess).

First off I'm not an expert so take this advice and links with a grain of salt until confirmed with a ranger or someone smarter than me.

The sites being full was actually a blessing as we found a place to head off into the forest and set up camp. It was nice and secluded, yet we could still see the road from behind some trees as you can't just romp back there and tear it all up.
You can do dispersed camping (see links below), but there are some restrictions, specifically the big one of NO FIRE.
Gas/Propane stoves only.
You can get a permit online via one of the links below.

Some folks obviously violated this rule and the ranger did patrol the south roads like 2N10 at night and busted some folks who had fires (idiots), and said we were good to camp there even though we were pretty far off the main road and into the trees.

If you head up there and it's full that's the best thing about having an off road vehicle, find and make your own place to camp (all things being legal that is)

find 2N11B. lots of good spots at the end and a beautiful view if you walk back about 5 minutes.
