Big Bear II

Looks like you all had fun, nice shot of the truck going thru the water!

If you are not running LT rated tires, its time to change. 32" is what you are running now. I would not get too hung up on going up to 33's. If you plan on going bigger (wider), you will need spacers or new wheels with negative offset. I'd recommend the latter. I'm sure you could work a deal with discount tire to trade the Nittos, if they are not chewed up yet. Sell your stock wheels and you will not be out too much cash.

Consider carefully whether you need an M/T. I chose M/T's based on where I live and the terrain I wheel on. In the end I feel I bought one of the quietest M/T's but you definitely know they are under the truck. We have a lot of mud in Maine . You do most of your off-roading in the desert, right? You could go without an MT and have a nice quiet ride to the trails. A good A/T will probably be the best bet. As Thai posted, there are many brands available. Look for a tire with sidewall tread. It will provide the needed protection for rocky trails. Some FJ owners running Nitto TG in LT rated sizes claim they have very strong sidewalls. If I had to choose, I'd look at BFG, Nitto, Toyo, ProComp and Mickey Thompson.

BTW, I just found out that Nitto is coming out with 285/75/17 E-rated tire... its a big 33" almost 34" tire. But not so big and wide as to need a body mount chop.

Good point...is Josh running P-rated tires???!!!

Yep.

Rook, I already have wheel spacers on, and already have the fenders trimmed to hell from the bad sized rims I had on for 1 day before I took them back. I would just need to remove the mud flap, I just prefer to have a full size spare for if/when I need it. I have sliders on order right now, and will get a hi-lift when they are put on so that I am able to swap out my spare if needed. Just makes more sense to have a full size spare so I can continue wheeling as normal if one goes out.

What's the difference between the new Nitto and the 285/70/17? Just that it's more narrow? Would one of these fit in my spare location?

Which trail was that on your pics? Once again, looks awesome.

Out right next to John Bull trail. I can't remember the # though, Blair might. 3N02 maybe? Nah, doesn't sound right. If you take it all the way down you end up at a cement mill.

Falls,

What I (and many others) think of TireRack consumer surveys have been discussed at length before...so, i am not sure why you're asking it again since you have read it before.

As stated before, i trust actual reviews by TireRack editors, off-road/truck magazines reviews, and Consumer Reports reviews more so than TR's consumer surveys. Although there may be some tampering by advertisement money, this has never been really proven in any magazine that i know of??? I hear Lexus owners whine about Car & Driver's "favoritism" towards BMW...i hear Honda owners complain of C&D's favoritism of Toyota...i hear domestic owners complain about C&D favoritism of Japanese brands...do you see a pattern here?? The loser of a comparison always complain about "favoritism" of a magazine. Facts of life...human nature. Yeah, i am sure that there are some magazines out there that favor one brand, but is it really that obvious and common??? I doubt it.

Consumer Reports tire comparisons are done by an independent company. This was clearly stated in the last tire comparo i read (passenger all season tire). So, i don't know if this independent company had any favoritism, but from their results, it was widespread among the different brands. I would assume that it was a fair fight.

If you read MY reviews of tires, then you will see that i am no exception to human nature. I tend to speak highly of tires that i just bought and compare them favorably to my old tires. However, as i have more experience with them, i usually post more accurate reviews of the tire's performance. See my post on Firestone Destination M/Ts...or my post on Nittos TG on the Benzworld forum. It's simply human nature. :)

Yeah, BFG AT KO can get bad as they age...but, aren't your REVOs doing a similar thing??? Tires don't do well as they age...this has been proven over and over again. Your REVO's superduper multi-compound tread was supposed to counteract this aging process...did it? I am sure that it helped some and thus is probably aging better than the average BFG. This is why i tend to replace tires much sooner than their expected death because, no matter what their warranty or tire life expectancy, rubber don't do well with age.

I'm not going to hi-jack this thread , was just making a point about who can you trust and was asking a question , but.......??????

Guys-

I am now hijacking the thread too :bigok:

Do you think a set of 265/70/17 BFG's with about 3000 miles on them and $300 would be a good deal? The seller claims there is between 10-11/32nds of tread, they are worn pretty evenly and there is slight "rounding" along the inner edge.

Someone is trying to sell a set of used ones and it looks like it might be a decent way to approach trying out a new tire.

Thanks! :D

I am confused...those BFG has only 3000 miles and the tread depth is down to 10-11/32??? Most BFG AT KO have at least 15-16/32 depth. $300 is a good price for 4 tires...but i am wondering if this is "too good to be true" kinda deal. Be careful.

Who knows, I am somewhat skeptical here are the tires, maybe that will help?

I just don't want to spend $300 unwisely :bash:

Hey Blair...I would save the $300 and just purchase new ones...at least they'll be brand new.

Those tires still look like they have enough tread but I personally am weary of buying used tires.

That trail is a lot of fun, Josh was right, it is 3N02.

It is on the way to John Bull (usually not the way people go though, the exit if you will) and where the road goes left onto John Bull continue to the right.

Apparently the actual trail dead ends somewhere well before we stop but it is a lot of fun and gives you some great views. Also, we camped there our first time out and it was a really remote and cool place to stay.

Be careful though, when you get onto the quartz trail that heads down the mountain make sure to turn around at the first switchback (which is still quite an experience) because if you go all the way down there is nowhere to turn around and you will be backing up. If you look down from where you turn around you will see at least 3 cars that have fallen off and not fared too well. Including a Tacoma that rolled down the hill the week before we were there.

and I am also really weary of used tries, I am just trying to save some money since I am putting on a lightbar sometime soon!

Damn...nevermind LOL...I'll just wait and see if I can join another group to go with :) Plus I don't think I can take my rig that deep being it's only a 4X2 - maybe I can invest on an OME lift and some BFG AT KO tires, this will help with some of the handling.

Yeah you definitely should not, you MIGHT make it down, but definitely will not make it back up haha

Blair , On the tire , the deal is a good one , but I agree with Thai , something is not right about the wear on the tires with 3k miles on them. Kinda strange..... his reason for selling is ??

Blair, told you that you shouldn't buy them. :D

I know I know, it is just so temping. All it takes is $300 and a short drive....

BTW still no luck finding my camera cord, I will keep looking though

The 285/75 was as much a reference to a tire size option as it was ironic. As I was posting the size doesnt matter portion of my post I found that thread on the FJ forum. 285/75's are just a taller version of 285/70's. Essentially a narrow 34" tire option. Most 33-34's are around 12" wide versus a 285 being under 11". As we know, fitting 34's on a 4th gen usually requires a little surgery to the body mount. This tire may be an option for those who'd rather not chop. (dont hold me to it, 'cuz I'm guessing somewhat)

As for your spare, the biggest I've seen fit underneath is PRO-MED's 275/65/18 Cooper STT. That measures out 32.1" Which incidentally is the same diameter as a 255/75/17. The latter may be the best option as a spare for you. You can get a cheap, but very good BFG M/T for around 90 bucks, it will perform well and you could run 32 or a 33's at the corners without much problem. In fact youd be within a half inch of the diameter of either a 285/70 or 265/70. If you needed to put the spare on, provided you did not put excessive miles (hundreds) it would not burn the diff. We're talking about approx 10 revs/mile difference between either tire size.

That looks like great fun guys, thanks for posting pics! I posted on the off road thread on my last outing. And I'm trying to get a bunch of us up this way (n. ca.) to go out again soon.
Again, glad to see others out enjoying what the 4Runner is really good at!!

Its always fun to get some fellow 4runners together to go wheeling. Josh and I have met up with a few others guys once before but since we seem to arrange all our trips last minute and do not exactly worry about details (which is both good and bad) it is not too conducive to arranging a trip, last time we went up we didn't arrange a campsite and drove around trying to find one so we ended up camping in the middle of nowhere, which was actually awesome.

After my new lift, spidertrax, tires and light bar we will definitely be arranging more trips :D
