I am from SoCal, and I plan on going camping up in Big Sur on November 25th-26th. Most of Big Sur campsites are either privately owned (expensive) or full for the weekend. I've searched on google, and a few sites camp up. I wanted to check here to see if anyone has ever camped at Big Sur that is away from the crowd. Can someone point me in the right direction? Maybe coordinates? Thanks.

Sadly most of the Big Sur area suffered a fire not too long ago so I'm not sure which areas were unaffected. I took a trip up Prewitt Ridge/South Coast Ridge Road and some of the surrounding area back in May and the sites were pretty accessible. They aren't reserved sites but fill up rather quickly (especially on Prewitt Ridge). Keep in mind all these sites are primitive with no water or toilets.

Highway 1 is closed due to the huge mudslide. However, there are still free camp spots you can hit.

Only way to get here is to take the back route to Big Sur, aka through Fort Hunter Ligget. I take my '02 4R 2WD up there all the time and make it up the dirt roads pretty easily. Although, if you're going when its muddy, 4WD is absolutely necessary.
The spot is free dispersed camping. No bathrooms. No amenities. But free camping. Rangers DO patrol the area, so make sure you are aware of any camping rules or fire rules before going.
