Bigger Tires.... spare??

Hi... I've just replaced my trusty old '93 Isuzu Trooper 4x4 with a 2003 4Runner LTD V8 4X4!! I'm very happy so far, tons more power thats for damn sure. Only downside so far is that the 4th generation 4Runner's just don't have big enough tires for where I need to go [offroad].

So... getting a Revtek 4" lift next Wednesday and a set of 285/70/17 BFG AT KOs.

QUESTION...
Will I be able to fit a 285/70/17 spare tire up where the stock one it sitting?

If not.. What is everyone else doing?

I don't believe you will. The stock 4Runner tire is 265/65/17 and people have been able to squeeze a 265/70/17 into the spare tire without problems. The 265/70/17 diameter is 31.6" and your projected tire of 285/70/17 would be 32.7"

You may be able to squeeze the bigger tire in if you removed the hitch in the rear. I've seen people put a basket on top of their trucks and carry their full size spare up there.

congrats on the new truck. the revtek is 3" (2.5 in the rear) not 4", some have gotten 285s in there, but I believe you have to do some trimming in order to decrease rubbing. you can put the tire on a rack on your roof but that changes your weight distribution and makes your vehicle more tippy (that tire weighs a decent amount). I've got 265/70/17 s and they don't rub.

i haven't seen anything yet, but making plans. i'm working with carli suspension in orange, ca. they say that the 285/70/17s will fit... so we'll see. i guess i won't believe it until i drive it.

anyone familiar with carli suspension?

if you're mechanically inclined, you might consider trying this feat yourself as it's not that difficult to do. there are many members in the local la/oc area that has done this upgrade with friends so look into that to save some $$ also if you pick a weekend and post the date/time/location, ppl will show up and help ya out (abunch of great peeps here).

285's will fit but you will rub the panhard rod (the thing that runs across the back of the axle to frame). So it's really not recommended. Also you have the new trailer hitch rated at some insane number (6000+) so the hitch gets in the way so no go.

You're going to have to either store it inside the cabin or load it up on top which is not recommended.

Or get a rear bumper with a tire carrier, like someone else had

Does offset affect this in any way? I really want to get some 285's on mine. How bad is the rubbing? NavyAirCrew has 285's on his, but did not mention this.

offset is a characteristic of the wheel and will not make a diff whether or not the 285's will underside. I can pretty much say it'll rub like a "mofo" on your panhard rod. (i have perm rub marks even when i completely deflated my spare). the paint is pretty much gone.

but keep in mind I had 285/75/16 MTR's so that does make a big difference when compared to say AT's of the equivalent size.

I have the 3" Revtek lift and run 285/75/16's underneath. The only times I ever have any rub problems while driving is when a wheel gets completely stuffed. I plan on doing a 1" body lift that will hopefully help with that. As far as the spare, I keep it lashed in the back cargo area. The only time I am needing of that space is during moose and caribou season, and thats only once a year. Works for me...

Do what a few other SUVs are doing...deflate your big spare tire before putting it on (to decrease the size). Then just carry a powerful tire air compressor with you whereever you go. If you need the spare, then just take it down and inflate it to proper pressure.

You know, I was thinking of trying this .. I'm not certain the bigger tire will fit, even when deflated but it certainly worth a try.

I carry a VIAIR 200P in the back, that ought to work.

I don't have the new tires on yet... planning on getting the work done for me next week. I know the install isn't rocket science, but when making changes like this I usually prefer to have someone else to blame when things go wrong. :-\

latched in the back isn't a bad thought. what is the diameter in inches for a 285/75/16 tire? is it right at 33?
