So the 285 duratrac fits? I just picked up a set this weekend and was checking out the clearance and the stock tire looks like it only has less than 1/2 inch room before the hitch? I have a 2015....I wonder if there is less room.

I have a 2014. it is the same underneath. I have a 255/80/17, same OD but doesn't hang down so far, and it fits no issues. It didn't look like it would but it really does.

No, it fits tight and you have a little play in position. The difference in radius between a 285/70 and 265/70 is like .6"

Here is a TE rim with a BFG KO2 tire (265 70 R17). It hangs a bit lower than the stock spare wheel and Duratrac tire.

The tire shop said my full sized 285 70 17 didn't fit... This thread made me feel confident in doing it. Going to try momentarily. Wish me luck.

Ever heard of a hide-a-spare? As long as you are running open diffs and not planning on driving coast to coast on it you'd be fine. It's a spare, as in stay's on long enough to get one fixed or replaced. :wink2:

I shoehorned my half worn 265/70 Grabber on the spare wheel under there again today. It fits, but I don't see any wiggle room for a bigger one. I'm not saying it can't be done because people in here have shown their 285's under there. I just don't know how they do it.

My 285/70r17 Ridge Grappler fit just fine under mine. Obviously hangs lower than the traditional spare.

I have a 34" tire under there now k02 34x10.5...fits easy peasy. I plan to eventually run 35s and stick a 35 under there. Interco makes a 35x10.5 SSR radial. Should fit deflated... I'm a big believer in keeping the weight where it should be and not hanging off the back of the truck....I just want my spare to get me home or to the tire shop....

Also, plugs will typically get you out unless you rip a side wall or something..

If you're planning on going somewhere where a spare is likely to be pulled out for use, you should probably invest in a size-matching spare.

It's a pretty common-sense item to have for offroading and/or exploration.

It sure is. So is a limited wallet. I didn't finally replace the factory spare until earlier this year when I had to replace 2 Grabbers because one had a sidewall puncture. The good one was placed on my spare wheel. Fortunately I stayed with 265/70 as my regular tire size. Sometimes ya gots to go with what you got.

From the looks of your photo, it seems you have plenty of money to spend on a 5th tire (or at least you have spent plenty of money on mods).

If I were going to start building up a 4runner, (5) sized and brand-matching tires would be prioritized well above a roof rack, bushwhacker wheel flares, or aftermarket wheels.

Like I said, most people who offroad frequently have that 5th tire hanging off their back bumper for a reason.

Sarcasm aside, the issue of where you mount your 5th tire isn't so important (many end up mounting them on a rear bumper set up mostly due to its size not being accommodated in the factory location).

What's more important is that you have one (of the same size and make as your other four).
