Bike rack as tire carrier?

Hi all,

Apologies if it has been asked before, but has anyone tried to use/modify a sturdy bicycle rack (eg. yakima etc) as a tire carrier? The 4-bike ones should be able to manage the weight of a tire and rim (approx. 70lbs in my case). I know that there are swing out racks as well. May be a cheap option to the tire carrier choices that we currently have? Or tell me why it won't work? TIA!

Four 30lb bikes is certainly more than 70lb tire. I don't see why it wouldn't work.

If you have a spare hanging rack, there is no reason is shouldn't work. Otherwise why not just buy a cheaper one?
You could likely just drill a hole through the upright for a hitch pin to act as a positive stop and then mount one of those universal clamp-style spare carriers for trailers..

Yes, my main thought is to actually get a side swinging adapter like this:

and then adding a spare tire adapter like this:
Amazon.com: CURT 31006 24-Inch High Trailer Hitch Spare Tire Mount for 2-inch Receiver: Automotive

Total cost 329+110= $440.

I was originally looking at the Wilco hitchgate solo, but it's about $895 for a swinging one:

Just wondering if there's something that I missed, or reason(s) to get the Solo instead?

Yeah I was thinking more of a DIY approach if you already had an existing bike rack. Kuat makes nice stuff but you could likely save some cost going with a vertical swing rather than horizontal.

Ah gotcha. I don't actually have a bike rack at the moment. I have considered the vertical swing as well, but would probably get more use out of the horizontal swing (and not have to drop/lift the tire every time I wanted to open the rear hatch)...

I was going to build one but decided I wanted a swing out and didn't want to spend the time to fab one. 8 weeks later still waiting, kinda wishing I had just made my own. Anyways, here is another option for you...

Curt spare tire carrier paired with a fold down trailer hitch. These can be obtained from Amazon or E Trailer for short money. Some minor mod is necessary. Be warned it will rattle a bit unless you mod id further, but so would a bike rack.

EDIT: just saw your above post using the Curt and the swing out. That slick too. Let us know what up doing.

you're probably better off with Rigd Ultraswing.
