Bilstein 5100+Stock spring+BFG KO2 feedback

Have 5100 all around installed on my 2012 SR5 4x4. Stock springs, front set at 0.85.
1. Now the nose dive issue is basically completely gone, even hitting brakes very hard, the front just sink a little bit, but absolutely not annoying like before.
2. The body roll during turning still exists. It is improved but certainly not as much as nose dive.
3. It’s a STIFF shock... My rear view mirror is shaken loose and makes shaking noise after installation. At first the tire was inflated to 38 psi, bumpy as hell. Then I lowered tire psi to 35 then 32 then 30, much better but I’m still getting used to it. I researched on forum and found that lots of people say FJ spring is better paired with 5100. Will FJ spring makes the ride more bumpy since the spring is more firm right?
4. Random rattle noise from front end. I heard a tiny rattle noise now and then from front end. It’s not loud at all, I can only hear it during mild accelaration from 20mph-40mph. It’s like a small bell ringing sound, I’m not sure if this is the best way to describe it. During the installation, ABS wire was stretched and replaced. Maybe the wire was not installed properly and makes noise? The mechanic who install the suspension said he cannot hear anything (of course) and they offer no warranty on customer supplied parts, so I have to diagnose the cause myself, any feedback is appreciated!

The rattle is likely a c-clip on the suspension up front. The noise has been reported before several times and that seems to be the culprit because it is loose in the notch. Not a safety issue. I would not run the air any lower than manufacturer door spec (32psi). Their reason for that recommendation is it provides the best compromise between ride comfort and tire durability. And anything lower could generate more heat in the tire causing early failure. Heck, if I could get a way with it I would run the 20 psi I do off road! You want a Cadillac ride? Lol

Thanks for the reply. Are you referring the c-clip in the groove that holds the spring perch? I will do some search on that.

If you bump up to an E rated tire your body roll will become a non-issue. Tires are heavier but the stiffer sidewall significantly diminishes roll. Running tire pressures around 40 works best but you'll have to experiment with what you prefer.

If you lived near Houston I'd have ripped my similar setup out & sold it to you for cheap. I'm actually going back to stock soon. My setup did get softer after 1-2k miles though, maybe give it some more time. My tires are the 10 ply; ridiculous for this vehicle. Way to heavy for this V6. The Bilstein upgrade is not horrible, but the cost outweighs the benefits.

Do you mind sharing your reason for going back to stock? I’m thinking of doing a 5100 setup at 1.75 with 1” rear spacer soon. Would love to hear your input!

I have a similar setup but with shocks set to 1.75 - just went from old BFG KOs (E load) to New BFG KO2s (E load) and still have the great ride I did before. I never perceived the ride as too harsh. 40 PSI.

Looks really good but it's death by 1000 cuts really.
  • Doesn't ride good on the highway, very squirrely; even with 3* caster.
  • Doesn't ride good around town either. This is due to the way the shocks are valved. Excessive Rebound damping & decreased compression. This is to offset the extra preload.
  • Not as stable on curves due to increased ride height.
  • The tires are too heavy for this vehicle. Not stable at speed or in the rain. Braking & acceleration are adversely affected.
  • MPG & Acceleration/braking.
I also installed 1.25" wheel spacers which don't affect ride, just a little rubbing afterwards.

Do think this would be remedied with new springs in the front, or is it the bilsteins in general that cause the rough ride? Wanting make sure I go the right rout!

I had my shop install the 5100s and a 1" Cornfed in the rear. I also told them 1.75" but he called during the install and said that would leave me with a huge rake. He convinced me to do the 2.5" and he was right, it sits practically level. Only a tape measure can prove other wise.

Looks good too, but it is a bit higher than I was looking for. I was already planning on 32.5" tires (+1" over my stock) so that larger lift fit well. Could probably go a tad bigger if you were interested at the 2.5".

I have the 20" wheels and went with E rated tires. Have not noticed any squirrel-y road manners or a particularly rough ride but I have a shorter sidewall and 100,000 on the OEM shocks before swap. The heavier tires might be noticeable but hard to say since the V6 is already an underwhelming engine. MPG dropped from 18+ to 17+.

I had my shop install OME 885s in the front on the lowest spring setting of Bilstein 5100s, got a significant lift (didn't feel like measuring before and after). I didn't replace the rear springs, because I didn't feel it was necessary. However I may change my mind to bring the rear up to a level height. The ride quality is amazing, I do not have any more nose dive, the brakes feel more effective, and I get a smooth ride onroad, and a responsive ride offroad. One of the best decisions I have made, and the first big modification for Max.

I have 51's at 2.5, rear at 1.5'' and SPC uca's with 4.0 caster+ 275/70/17 BFG A/T's and the truck is awesome! Rides better than stock with no dive, less roll and excellent action on bumps. Being a truck, I don't expect Cadillac ride but the Wife says it is almost a ''mushy'' as stock to her. I feel it is improved in every way as a Sporty Truck. I don't want, or expect a ''car-like'' ride.:wink2:

Maybe it's because the uneven local road here. I don't have complaints on highway. After 3 months after installation, I think it's softened a little.

Body roll is not an issue to me. It's getting better, just not as much as the nose dive elimination.
