Bilstein 6112 In

Adjustment requires disassembly.

Yep, adjustment does require at least some disassembly. I would think that if you use the no spring compressor method and had a way to hold the spring up in place, you could possibly drop the shock out enough to adjust the c-clip then reassemble. I've been lucky with the few sets I've installed because I was able to get the desired height on the first try.

SteadFAST the rig looks great man, I'm getting close to POSSIBLY pulling the trigger on a kit, and considering the 6112's, I'm curious any particular way you landed on your choices for the rear shock/coil combo? Or why you went with the ICON 2.0 over 5160's or something?

I cant compare to the TRD Pro since I have never driven one. I have driven the KDSS and I own a non-KDSS 4Runner and I will say my 4Runner feels dramatically more stable. Definitely less nose-dive under braking and I have taken it off-road and it is drastically improved.

Is there better systems out there... probably for $$$$$$

No Regrets.

Total Performance recommended it to me... I was going to go with the 5160s but the Icon 2.0s are longer in length than the Bilstein 5160s.

I just ordered some 6112's (47-259768) for my 2016 TEP. In case anyone else is curious about the clip settings versus the 5100's, here are the specs:

So I just installed the 6112's on the front of my TRD offroad (Trail) w/ KDSS.

The installation was fairly straight forward. I put the Sway-a-way 1.5" coils on the back (although its closer to 2":frusty:)and will install the 5160's once they arrive.

Here is my concern with the specs.

I'm going for the full 2.5" lift on the front, and used the 7/6 setting as shown on the bilstein instructions. But because of the KDSS system, I still have a 1" lean (passenger side is low). Once the rear struts arrive, I'll get the wheel alignment done, and if the system hasn't leveled itself out by then, I'll have the dealership do what they can (ie. bleed the system as recommended by this forum... but expensive if I screw it up). The passenger side may need to come up to the top notch to get help level it out... which means it'll be another couple hours work to pull out the strut, disassemble, move the circlip, assemble and install.

For the assembly of the 6112's, there isn't much room between the spring and strut. The spring compressors I have could not compress the spring enough that I could even start to thread on the top nut. After messing around with it for ~2 hours, I gave up and had a shop assemble everything and I did the install. With the proper tools, it should take 10 minutes to do.

My recommendation... if you have a KDSS equipped vehicle, you may want to look at a threaded coilover (Icon, Toytec, King) just to save the hastle of trying to balance out the system. This had crossed my mind before buying the bilstein set up. I may live to regret it if I can't get this to level out.

I find it curious that Bilstein isn't offering alternative instructions for KDSS-equipped vehicles since from what I've read, the "KDSS lean" is typically toward the passenger side (opposite of non-KDSS vehicles).

#Sauce839, maybe you could try just swapping coilover assemblies from side to side without disassembling them or moving clip positions, and see if that levels your 4R out.

Sauce839 and TEujunga, I dont think the 6112s are Driver or Passenger specific, although it might be worth a shot. I have the 5100s with OME 884s and experience the very same lean on my 13 TE KDSS. Will either get front/rear spacers for the right passenger side or go with adjustable coilovers.

Well, if you position the Circlip at groove #6 on one shock and #7 on the other, then by definition they become side-specific. It would make sense to me to put the taller one on the lower side of a vehicle that leans.

The non-KDSS trucks have a driver-side lean so the 6112s are supposed to correct that when set to the Bilstein instructions. If you do that on a KDSS rig you're exaggerating the already present lean.

If you go to the dealer and they measure anything under 0.787" of lean that falls officially within Toyota spec and they won't touch it.

I would bet you could swap your two front 6112s set the way they are and your lean would get better.

It's best to take measurements of your stock setup and make necessary adjustments to the 6112 prior to install.

Well damn. I sorta wish Bilstein had put that in their instructions.... oh well, I guess I got work to do. Thanks.

My point exactly. The instructions assume that all T4Rs have a passenger side lean. They should be revised to tell the installer to measure the front of the vehicle for any lean before setting the circlip positions.

Good luck -- at least you don't have to disassemble/reassemble the coilovers if you're just going to swap them.

6112 Install

6112/5100s with OME 2895 rears and TC UCAs. Ride quality is amazing compared to stock. Gone is the nose dive, lean while cornering and overly soft bouncy ride. Highly suggest the 6112s if your on the fence about them.

Silly question from a Newb ... was it a pain installing with KDSS? Between this and maybe having a lean I'm a tad gunshy.

Looks great. Few questions, was there a reason for going with new UCA's? Which setting/perch for the 6112's? How many inches of lift in the rear? Thanks...

Everything was off the truck already so i figured it was a good time just do the UCAs as well. Added stability and flexibility for alignment. Figured I do everything right the first time and not try and cut a corner. You could get by without getting UCAs though. Just have to find an amazing alignment tech.

Which setting/perch for the 6112's?

I did not do the install myself but I'm pretty sure the tech with went the 6th or 7th setting.

How many inches of lift in the rear? Thanks...

As it currently sits its a little high in the rear. I think I'm around 2.25. Lift went in yesterday so springs have some settling to do yet. Will give more precise measurements once they do. Front is just a tad over 2.5. These are measurements without factoring in added tire height I got from 285s.

The install with the KDSS wasn't overly hard. There are a few extra bolts to loosen or take off, and then you need a block of wood or a strap under the hydraulic cylinder. Once you see it, it will make perfect sense. There is an excellent thread on how to do it, and if you google 4runner lift KDSS, there is an excellent video showing how to do it. If you've done any suspension work before, its pretty straight forward providing you have the right tools (jack, jack stands, spring compressor). An extra set of hands is always beneficial. Also, just go slow, take your time. If this is your first install, it will take up a good amount of your weekend.

Also, be careful around the ABS wire on the front. I snagged mine and broke the wires. I successfully soldered them back together, but its a bit heart breaking when everything is back together and all the warning lights are flashing on the dash.

As for the lean, I would say the best option is to opt for an adjustable coil over (threaded adjustment with a spanner wrench, not the clip style that Bilstein has). For the 2 hours or so it takes to pull the strut assembly out, disassemble, adjust, reassemble and install, It would be worth the additional cost IMO. Plus the 6112's are tougher to reassemble due to the clearances. Might be worth taking it to a shop. If I was to do this again, I would have just ordered the toytec 2.0 boss lift and called it good. Its a simple pull the existing strut tower/spring assembly out, and install the new ones. They come fully assembled and you just need to set the height you want. Or if you have the budget, go with the Icon's.

All and all, the bilsteins look cool, and the ride quality is a bit stiff compared to stock, but at a 2.5" lift, there is a fair amount of pre-load on those springs.

Hope that helps some.
