Bilstein 6112's Installed!

After 145k miles, the stock XREAS needed to be replaced. Although it wasn't leaking, the ride was downright uncomfortable and the car was no longer fun to be in. There was considerable sagging, terrible ride characteristics, constant bottoming out, poor steering feedback, and huge amounts of wavering and body roll at speeds. I finally had the time to completely redo the front end.

I decided to go with Bilstein 6112's after hearing such positive feedback about them from those who run them. I paired them with Bilstein 5100's in the rear with Icon 2" lift springs. Initially, I set them to the fourth setting which netted be about 2" lift over stock. As expected, the alignment cams on the LCA's were completely frozen. Fast forward two weeks later and I had brand new Toyota LCA's and Camburg Uni-Ball UCA's installed. I also lowered the Bilsteins to the 2nd notch and added a 1" top out spacer in the front and 1.5" spacer in the rear. I didn't want to deal with having to press in new bushings - the results would not be the same as new genuine OEM arms. I'm currently sitting with a ~3/3.5 lift. I'm a little high in the rear now and will probably remove the spacer. I prefer a little rake but not quite as much as I have now.

The ride is unbelievable. Potholes, bumps, and road imperfections are nearly undetectable. On the highway, it tracks perfectly straight and doesn't jump around like it used to. Overall, I'm extremely pleased. Next on my list is 275 KO2's. My 265 KO's have 110k on them and I want to replace them before another Chicago winter. Without a doubt they are the best tires that I have ever used.

Thanks for the post ! In the very near future I planned on doing the 5100 swap but am now leaning towards the the 6112's in front and 5100's in back.

Where did you have the work done?

I'm looking to do this with my 05, ready to order right now. For some reason the 4runner doesn't seem to actually be listed for this shock, do you know why? What application did you buy them for knowing they would work for you? Thanks!

Im doing the same with 6112s in front and 5100 with T12 spring in the rear. Rear set up will have 1.5in lift. I didnt want to go to much higher than 2in, and deal with cv shaft issues and such.

Btw the OPs runner looks awsome! wish mine would look that good.

truck looks great!! well done...close to installing these myself

couple questions for the OP- you said the 4th setting netted you 2" then you went to setting 2 w a 1" spacer- can you explain/estimate what you feel are the lift settings?

also, whats the purpose/advantage of lowering your 6112's only to add a topout spacer?? i alway thought a lift via shocks/coilover was superior to a spacer

My 6112s just came in last week. Picked them up from carid for $551 shipped! They price matched amazon!

Im hoping the highest setting will get me about 2.5 inches. Id like to see more peeps results. I will post my results once I get them installed. I'm just waiting for my rear shocks.

May have to order from there, do they come assembled?

Thinking of pairing with 5100 rears with Wheelers T12 eibach spring.

Wheeler's T12 Rear Coil Spring Pair

Nope. Nut coils and shock. I ordered two new sets of mounts, isolators, etc from rock auto (kyb brand). It was like $20ish each. So I can pre assemble them and not have to wait to get the original ones out.

For the rears I'm going w 5160s. Cheapest I found d was $175 from either amazon or 4wheelparts. Carid would price match and thst would be free shipping and no tax! Bad thing is is that they are on national backorder till may or July!

Is that $175 for the set? Or each. I'd be tempted to go overkill on the 5160 if it was cheap. If it's each, you could get Icon rears for that. The remote reservoir is great if you're actually heating up/ fading your shocks or need extra length. Other than that.... Not sure if the risk of leaks from the lines is worth it

$175 each. Yeh, I have been contemplating HARD between the Icon VS 2.0s and the Bily 5160s. I was so ready to pull the trigger on the Icon but I think I'll try out the bilsteins. The Icon's are actually cheaper. I was quoted $160 each from CARiD (that is $175 + $15 gc for next purchase/ea). I think you can't go wrong either way but for a similar price, I'd rather get remote resi but good point on the possibility of the lines leaking.

They are both digressive valving. So I doubt there's a huge appreciable difference in performance. Both monotube as well. I know icon is revalveable and rebuildable. To me that's an advantage over remote res. Unless the 5160 is also rebuildable as they should be. It's just a monotube

And those tires have 110k on them? They look like they are still good?!

good points! dang u! u make me think twice now lol.

I was second guessing the 5160s because i was thinking they are just a 5100 with a remote resi but Bilstein said it was more than that. :T i believe the 5160s are "rebuildable". I called Bilstein and asked them about rebuilding them and they said that it would be cost-prohibitive not rebuild them....

how much does a rebuild or revalve job usually cost?

According to Bilstein website a non adjustable damper is about $95 for a rebuild. Plus shipping. I'd figure about $150 said and done. Almost the price of buying a new shock. :cry2:

Actually just read their website says $120 for a 5160 refurbish. So yeah. Same price as a new shock, which is pretty reasonable really. Takes some time to rebuild and dyno a shock. At least two hours. New seals. Shock oil. Dyno test. Probably 3 hours in true labor. Icon sells rebuild kits. But you can find Bilstein stuff out here as well, NASCAR and dirt track use a lot of Bilstein so, the seals and stuff our out there. It's all a matter of what you're willing to do. Also I don't know if the 5160 is easily rebuildable. The icon seems to be...

yeh so not really worth rebuilding. i dont know if the icons would be worth it to rebuild either?

I'm curious, could you install the 6112's and 5100's and maintain stock height?
The mrs. is short and we have a new baby so she'd like the 4runner to stay stock for now. We'll lift it later.

My XREAS is going on 100000miles and I fear it's days are numbered...

Your rig looks great BTW.
It's a twin to mine although I see you have the limited rack and side steps. Better looking than the tubes to me...very nice.
