Bilstein 6112's Installed!

I'm curious, could you install the 6112's and 5100's and maintain stock height?
The mrs. is short and we have a new baby so she'd like the 4runner to stay stock for now. We'll lift it later.

My XREAS is going on 100000miles and I fear it's days are numbered...

Your rig looks great BTW.
It's a twin to mine although I see you have the limited rack and side steps. Better looking than the tubes to me...very nice.

Yes. You can maintain stock height. You'll probably gain an inch at the lowest setting from settling.

Agreed, thats why I swapped the tube steps. Their lines competed with the shape of the truck and left some awkward angles and gaps.

Bilstein 6112 part number for 4th gen is: 46-227287

I got these for $575 from carid (shipped no tax) + $25 gift card for the next purchase (effectively $550)...which I purchased rear springs.

Carid price matched amazons price even though they were not in stock. http://www.amazon.com/Bilstein-46-227287-6112-Suspension-Kit/dp/B00I97UDUI

5160s seem to be out of stock everywhere. Amazon, carid, Shockwarehouse, 4wheelparts, everywhere! I heard they are on national backorder and won't be avail till may or July....?
Bilstein part# is 25-227611

Cheapest I found is $176 each at Shockwarehouse w no tax and free shipping.

According to Bilstein website a non adjustable damper is about $95 for a rebuild. Plus shipping. I'd figure about $150 said and done. Almost the price of buying a new shock. :cry2:

Actually just read their website says $120 for a 5160 refurbish. So yeah. Same price as a new shock, which is pretty reasonable really. Takes some time to rebuild and dyno a shock. At least two hours. New seals. Shock oil. Dyno test. Probably 3 hours in true labor. Icon sells rebuild kits. But you can find Bilstein stuff out here as well, NASCAR and dirt track use a lot of Bilstein so, the seals and stuff our out there. It's all a matter of what you're willing to do. Also I don't know if the 5160 is easily rebuildable. The icon seems to be...

5160s can be done at home if you have experience rebuilding shocks - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dC3RPn9dp8g

ICONs are easier - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QT6UkeyLTw8

I decided to go with Bilstein 6112's after hearing such positive feedback about them from those who run them. I paired them with Bilstein 5100's in the rear with Icon 2" lift springs. Initially, I set them to the fourth setting which netted be about 2" lift over stock. As expected, the alignment cams on the LCA's were completely frozen. Fast forward two weeks later and I had brand new Toyota LCA's and Camburg Uni-Ball UCA's installed. I also lowered the Bilsteins to the 2nd notch and added a 1" top out spacer in the front and 1.5" spacer in the rear. I didn't want to deal with having to press in new bushings - the results would not be the same as new genuine OEM arms. I'm currently sitting with a ~3/3.5 lift. I'm a little high in the rear now and will probably remove the spacer. I prefer a little rake but not quite as much as I have now.

Can you elaborate on the top out spacer? You say you went with a 1"; what brand? I'm actively looking to make a switch to these shocks and have had the thought of adding a top out spacer. Was originally thinking of going with Toytec's 1/4" top plate that advertises a gain of 1/4" - 1/2" of lift. Reasoning behind this is to be able to maintain lift while also running the coils at a lower setting to reduce the amount of preload on the spring. However I don't want to run into the issues of axle bind at down travel or bottoming out the shock on up travel.

Thanks.

I have an '04 4Runner SR5 2WD and am looking to replace suspension while giving It 2-3" of lift to fit 33" mud tires. Any suggestions?

I also have 6112s in the front... I've used them on two pretty substantial road trips which both include off road trail. The 2nd picture was a trail near Grand Teton... we ended up flying though it with average speeds of about 20-40 MPH.

I haven't tried anything higher-end than the 6112 yet, but its been about the smartest and most worth while upgrade I have done to my 4runner.

I have the standard 600 lb spring and its set to the 2nd from the highest lift setting.

2" OME 2895 lift springs in the rear and its sitting almost perfectly level, with just a tiny amount of rake when empty. Pretty much just what I was hoping for.

My center of wheel to fender heights were:
23" Front
24" Rear

For those talking about the 5100, I highly recommend a better shock... On road I very much enjoy the drive from the 5100 but they don't seem to pair well with the front 6112 setup.

Its a noticeable difference in performance off-road. I have already decided to swap out the shock because off-road it feels like I'm just dragging the tail end of the car as the 6112 soak up a lot more and feel very balanced and damped. For example I did get a lot of chatter from the rear when the fronts were just breezing though some rocky coble stone road on that Grand Teton trail.

I thought of getting the Bilstein 5160 mentioned here as it seems like a good match, but after getting a taste of what a 2.5" shock has to offer... its hard to keep my eye off the higher end hardware. I really want to rears to feel like my fronts or better... I may end up dropping some serious coin just to see what the fuss is about...

That said, I would highly recommend the 6112 to anyone looking for something better than the norm, without having to spend King, Fox, or ICON money. It was a solid middle ground that met all my expectations and then some.

The hard part for me is now I am asking the question, what can those guys do that the 6112 cant... suspension is addicting.

Same here. With my 6112's on now, all I can think of is how bad the 5100's in the rear with my superflexes feel. I already knew the rear setup needed to be redone, but after putting on the 6112's, it stands out bad. I hit bumps on the highways here doing 65mph, and the rear seems to jump and takes forever for the tires to get back on pavement. I'm thinking Icon 2.0 and see where that leaves me with the superflexes, if there's still a problem, I'll change the coils.

Bumbo and milehigh05....just to be clear, you are running the 5100 rears and NOT the 5160 remote reservoirs shocks, correct? I'm looking at this front setup but with 5160 and either Icon or Superflex rear with Airlift bags as I tow at times and want that added insurance of bags. Thanks!
