Bilstein TRD Pro suspension kit on sale PTR13-35140

Andi - did you keep both front shocks at bottom perch so that the bottom perch + toytec spacer resulted in 1.5" of lift? I want to net approx 2" and would rather just have both shocks at top perch then have to get the top plate spacers.

Thanks,

Finally, I installed the kit and gave a good workout at a near national forest service road.

Setup: TRD Pro FJ suspension kit + Toytec 1” lift front shock lower perch + Dobinson CP59-505R (1.25-1.5” lift) for rear

Installation: i almost gave up the installation after cursing at myself for not working out enough to bench press 600lb. After wrestling with spring compressor for 2hr, i remember seeing “no spring compressor” method here somewhere. Man.. that was my life saver. Anywayz, took me about 8hr total.

Alignment: i was able to squeeze out only 1.6* (driver) and 1.3* (passenger) castor for the front which are both below factory min spec. (See my onroad comment below)

The Lift: Unfortunately, I did not have any tape measure so I used the finger measurements instead and converted those to inch. So these aint precise but rather relative measures.

Front: 1.5-1.7”
Rear: 1.6-1.8”

Fronts are slightly lower than expected, rear are slightly higher than expected. Also both have slight driver side lean carryover. Despite these, i feel like headlights go out further than before... perhaps this could be pure placebo effect.

The Ride - Onroad: I can definitely tell the extra height when i turn but the car remains composed - probably due to stiffer/firmer shocks/speing combo, and there is slightly less rocking back and forth during accleration/decelleration as well. HOWEVER, I definitely lost the highway speed stability. With much smaller castor along with raised center of gravity, I feel like the car lost good amt of wind stability and steering wheel became lighter too.

The Ride - Offroad: More available travel appear to soak up small and big bumps much more efficiently. I never felt i bottomed out my shocks. Also higher ride height gave additional comfort level when i water-cross. However, ride feels little more harsher than before. The rougher ride quality could be attributable to KO2 not so much on the new suspension set up. This was my first time taking KO2 to some decent offroad trails.

I will come back and provide more update after putting more miles. So do i regret? Nope. This is a truck so I am willing to accept the trade offs for higher offroad capability.

Don't you need the passenger side to be on the lower clip in order to even out the lean?

Yes, I installed the passenger side 1st with the higher clip by mistake :ybrick:. Had to move the clip up on the driver side or it would have been way off. At some point I may lower the passenger side

Thanks,

I kept the original setting (i.e. top position for driver and lower position for passenger)

I appreciate the feedback, can I bother you for a wide angle shot of the 4runner?

Here you go~

Spring comparison

So I have the Bilstein ptr13-35140 kit and bought a Toytec TRD PRO 2 inch lift. I'm trying to decide whether or not to replace the springs from a 4runner. I'm really confused. Here are the two springs side by side.

So what trd springs are we looking at here?
3"x13" 550# (4Runner spec) and 3"x14" 600#(FJ/tacoma pro spec)

That's correct. Here's where I'm confused. If I add the Toytec Trd pro 2 lift to the 3x14 spring, will that cause a really stiff ride? Would it be better to use the smaller spring originally intended for the 4runner?

I used only half of Toytec 2” lift kit (ie only lower spring perch for 1”). I can compare my set up only to OEM due to my limited experience. I feel like the transition from OEM highway tires to BFG KO2 make my car slightly more stiffer than OEM suspension to the current TRD set up.

Also, you will lose ride height if you use 4runner’s 3x13 springs with FJ kot shocks. I think FJ kit’s spring perch location might be lower than 4runner’s kit to accomodate longer springs.

Thanks for your input. You bring up a very good point about the spring perch location. Once I have my stock shocks off I'll measure. The thought crossed my mind about using just the lower portion of the Toytec kit. I've got both sets of springs just in case.

This is kinda why I wanted new springs to pair with this kit. Ended up going with the TRD compatible Dobinson's 1" lift setup.

Please measure the spring length of Dobinsln’s 1” lift spring for 4runner TRD Pro and let us know. I feel like it will be about 13.5” in length which is right in between 4runner TRD kit and FJ TRD kit springs.

I'm a bit suspicious the FJ kit and the 4runner Pro kits may have different perch locations too based on the fact that the 4runner kit has both a lower spring rate and a shorter spring, yet both achieve 1" front lift over stock. I measured exactly 8.0" between the center of the lower shock bolt and the lowest snap ring groove on my FJ front shocks (ptr13-35140). Can someone with a TRD Pro or with the 4runner kit (ptr13-89160) take the same measurement? This may provide some insight into spring compatibility.

I have a question regarding the lean...

My '13 SR5 sits perfectly level, completely stock. I've got this kit ready to be installed but I'm undecided on what to do about the clip locations. I'm not looking for a lift per say, but rather just firming up the suspension. Leveling it a bit is a bonus. Should I keep the driver side on the upper notch or move it down to the lower setting?

My concern is if I leave the driver side on the upper notch, I'll have a slight lean towards the passenger side. Thoughts????

I left the drivers side on the top clip and passengers side on the lower and maintained the same pass/driver height difference as stock (1/4” I believe), with a 1” gain. Looks perfectly level on all fronts.
