Bilstein v. XREAS - error codes AND no warranty

Reading all herein, and calling Bilstein/Kalifornia to ask if their 4600 and 5100 shocks will work on my 04 4r XREAS, they say they will NOT warranty their shock on my truck, AND that I will get dash error codes after install if the XREAS hydraulic lines are not connected to anything.

HOW are people within this forum installing these aftermarket shocks (Bilsteins, OMEs, etc.) on XREAS 4rs and not having these problems, especially NO error codes?

My understanding is that the X-REAS system is totally mechanical/hydraulic. There is nothing that could set a code.
 
I installed bilstein 5100 on the front and rear of my 07 with XREAS and there are no error codes showing at all. The system is hydraulic with no electrical. Whoever you talked to was mistaken.
 
Maybe they're thinking of the RAS which will throw a code if the system is gutted.

I went with the high-tech solution for the flashing light; cut out a piece of the packaging from the brake light bulb I had to replace to stick over the lights on the dash. Got the warning light for the TPMS with it too.

One day I'll get around to fixing the wiring so the lights shut off... one day...
 
My 2005 had XREAS, no rear air suspension. There's no electrical component to any of it. I ripped it all out and installed Dobinsons all the way around. All good :thumb3:
 
Whoever you talked has no clue. Period. Unless you have factory rear air suspension, then yes, you might throw a code. If your truck doesn't have it, then no worries, go ahead and get the billies.

I'm waiting for my XREAS to go and would like to replace them, but I'll most likely get OEM shocks for them (billies are too stiff for me and I hear from many that KYB shocks are stiff as well).

[MENTION=656965]E=mc^SQD[/MENTION], Bilstein gave you incorrect information. The "X-REAS delete..." post linked in my sig should be helpful as it has detailed instructions for taking off your X-REAS and a link to the Toyota manual pages covering its removal.
 
Agreed, I swapped my '07 Xreas (dead shocks/struts) for a simplified KYB setup (shocks in back, struts up front) based on diy instructions posted here. No codes, no problem.

I have no idea why Bilstein would deny a warranty, either. The setup is no different from any other 4Runner once the Xreas system is removed.

Thanks Bluesky! The one thing I did not see in your install posts was what you did or didn't do with the XREAS exposed fittings; did you plug them with something? Did you just leave them as disconnected? If you plugged the 4 fittings, what did you plug them with?

Just remove the system completely. It's really easy to take out once you get under there.

Glad that post was helpful. No need to plug the fittings b/c the ones at the designated disconnect points are different than those at the shock. If you disconnect at the shock, fluid under pressure may spray everywhere; the fitting farther up the line closes it off, allowing individual shocks to be replaced with new X-REAS components (theoretically at least).

I did eventually remove the rest of the tubing as [MENTION=82718]NCrunner2012[/MENTION] mentioned. There are a few bolts but mainly you're just pulling them out of the clips.
