Have you heard anything about BFG giving the 285/75/17 the axe? I was looking for a set, but they seem to be sold out everywhere last time I looked. Guess I'm gonna look into 35s and everything needed to get those wheelable.
They're only getting the axe for the next few months. They're making a slight change to the carcass on the tall/skinny sizes. (285/75/17 and 255/85/16). They will be back in July/August.
Most 35's aren't a true 35", usually under. Several of the 285/75's are 33.8" to 34.1", so at this point to have a tire that has 35 on it is really splitting hairs. Go to 37's, then it's worth it!
Welp. Looks like the 285/75/17 is going out... http://www.toyota-4runner.org/off-roading/187472-km2s-discontinued-several-sizes.html
I was thinking custom fenders would be necessary to go over 35
I am probably going to try the metal tech 3" bumps for the rear to start out.
Should have a set of 35" general red labels sitting in my garage shortly after my return check gets deposited. I'm going to beat you![]()
Damn, I'd hate to see what those red labled 35's weigh.

I feel like adding larger bumps just defeats the purpose. Larger bumps will decrease your wheel travel which is super limited to begin with. It's nice to have larger tires but, at what expense.
Sure, I can have 37's but I would need to weld my control arms solid and reduce my steering by 40%.
Bigger tires are great but, we need all the wheel travel we can possibly get out of these T4R's.
That being said this is only my opinion and to each his own

As far as bump stops vs up travel goes. I'll take bigger tires and down travel all day long on a trail rig. Loss of up travel is well worth the trade-off. In fact, I traded out 3" of down travel for 2" of up travel in the rear and the improvements on the trail were significant. The problem I was having with all the down travel was my bumper dragging trying to crawl up ledges. That completely went away (in most scenarios) with the bump stops and more down travel. Also, tires are a big part of your suspension on a trail rig.
I assuming your talking about the MT long travel rear?? That system basically only has the bump stop in place to keep the new longer rear spring from binding and the new longer shock from bottoming out at full compression. The system makes up for the loss in 3" up travel to add a couple more inches of droop. This is great for a trail rig and if you want to have a higher ride hight.
I am going for a low stance all around capable desert runner, where wheel travel and handling is crucial. two different applications for the very versatile T4R
But also keep in mind more wheel travel = articulation. any time you loose up travel when your not gaining drop travel your loosing wheel travel.
TR4s seem like a good platforms for overland. Moderate and low speed trail runs with lots of comfy room to carry gear....
Needed new meats! KM2s decided to start falling apart but BFG paid for a large portion of my new tires. Went with MTRs this time in 305/70/17. Yes, you need to modify the rig to get this size tire to not rub...
