Black Ice + Guard Rail = Need Front Bumper (pic)

Well, this morning on the on-ramp to get on the interstate heading to work I hit a patch of black ice and spun into the guard rail. I wasn't going very fast as the on-ramp is curved quite sharply, but it definitely did a nice little number on the left (driver) side of my bumper.

So, I've checked out some options and as much as I'd like to get a simple (nothing too large) tube or plate bumper I don't think I can spend that kind of cash right now. Will one of the cheap aftermarket chrome bumpers work alright? And how cheap are they really?

If I get one of these aftermarket bumpers can I still fit the black guard over it as well? I'll have to replace that too.

Oh, and if anyone is willing to sell me a nice, simple plate bumper for a cheap price I'm into that as well :becky:

Looks like it needs a little more than a bumper. Do you have full coverage? If so, go get an estimate. You could probably pull the fender and trim piece under the headlight back into shape. But you'd get paid for the repairs and it would give you a few more $$$'s to play with the truck.
 
Honestly it all looks like it could be pulled back out. The item you linked is only the chrome portion of the bumper, not the plastic valance underneath. If I were you, I would call local junk yards and see what they had available before jumping on anything new, if a plate bumper isn't in the budget that is. Also consider if you do report it to insurance, you would be paying the premium increase, which may not be worth it in the long run.

It actually depends on the amount of the claim. Just went through this with StateFarm. My wife hit out neighbors car, the neighbor called in a claim. I called my agent and he informed me that if the total claim doesn't exceed $1,450, then there is no premium increase for us. So we got the neighbors car fixed and her rental car all for just under $1,000. I was prepared to pay for it out of pocket until my agent told me about the threshold for the premium increase. Since we stayed under that, it didn't make any sense not to claim it.

Good point, it's worth checking, but may not be worth it depending on the provider.
 
I think for now I'll probably pull the old chrome piece off and slap a new one on, pounding out the rest as much as possible. I would like nothing more than to get a plate bumper but I can't swing that right now unless I were to find one for a nice price.
 
If you cant get a aftermarket bumper right now.. just leave it, and save for the bumper you like.. The oem thin chrome metal is not worth repairing.
 
I spun out and hit a snowbank a few years back (before T4R) and replaced my bumper with a cheap aftermarket unit similar to what you've got linked. It fit fine, but started to show surface rust in a few months. The inside part of the bumper was fully coated in rust. I'd check CL (I sold my rusted bumper with cowl and turn signals for $40) or local junk yards if money is an issue...otherwise save for that sweet plate bumper you want.

Even if he has full coverage it probably isn't worth the claim after deductible considering how little damage was done and that his insurance would go up.

I would however take it to a shop and have an estimate given to determine if it is.

Those are kind of my thoughts as well. I still have a full deductible sitting there and no accidents or tickets on my record, thus my insurance is pretty cheap.

Depending on how old you are, how long you have been with your insurance company and the company itself, it may not go up any since you are clean on your record and this would be the first claim. However, you may be wasting your get out of jail free card.
 
The threshold for premium increase could be lower where you live too. I was in the body shop industry for 30 yrs and I learned one thing very well. Don't trust an insurance company. They are only interested in 3 things, making money, keeping that money, and covering their ass. Not worth making a claim for that small damage. It would be different if you ran in to someone's Bentley. Non OEM bumpers are crap, but for short term it would be allright. :guitar2:

In a way that is what I have decided to do! I'm going to wait for now, until at least after the first of the year, and then possibly order a Savage Off-road bumper. Maybe an addicted off-road if I can swing the price.

I know the Savage bumper comes without being powder coated and painted. How much to get that done typically?

About $15 in rattle cans.
