rubbing alcohol might work since the areas with more paint havent cured yet. I would try alcohol first then if that doesnt work try something a little stronger

Think I should try another clear coat and see if that covers it up? Guess it's worth a try because if it doesn't then I'm just gonna take it off anyway.

Welp rubbing alcohol just made it worse. I'm gonna go out and get some turpentine tomorrow to wash it off and try again. Hopefully the SR5 and Toyota logo come out alright. Knowing me and my OCD I'll probably do them all over again. :bash:

I used goo gone for the left over after taking off the emblems. after a bit of scrubbing, works really good. just need to be patient. emblems look good though. I'll be doing this when it warms up a little

What'd you use to scrub them? I was just using paper towels and it really wasn't working. There's still a little residue left but I'm just gonna put the emblems back on over top of that and it should be fine.

Hmm ok sounds like a good idea, can't believe I didn't think of that. I guess it's probably best to try and get off all the old adhesive before attaching the emblems because that way I'm attaching the emblems to the actual car rather than to residue from the old adhesive. I'm just too impatient and really want to get these emblems on my car.

If you want to remove the old adhesive from the back of the emblem or the car, use some lighter fluid or hand warmer fluid. This will dissovle the adhesive. Works everytime.

Put some on a rag and hold it over the adhesive. It will soften to where you can easily remove it.

Interesting, wouldn't have thought of that. Thanks for the tip. I was trying Goo Gone but it really wasn't doing much. I'll give lighter fluid a try. So you just hold the rag over the adhesive and get it soaked in on the old glue and then scrape it off? I bought a plastic putty knife like you would use for drywalling and used that to underneath the emblems when I was removing them. Hopefully that will work to scrape off the adhesive once I soften it up.

(Here's a dumb question- where can you buy lighter fluid?)

You can buy the charcoal lighter fluid anywhere they have grills although the Zippo brand lighter fluid is really pure and works good. It is way more expensive though. Sometimes they have those Zippo lighter kiosks in malls, that might be quick for you.

Awesome. Yeah the Goo Gone stuff worked for one of the emblems where there was hardly any residue left but on the others there is a good amount of chunky glue left on there and nothing's been working. I'll go out and grab some lighter fluid and give it a shot. Thanks for the tip!

Well, finally got the adhesive off and here are the emblems back on my runner:

Unfortunately I think I'm gonna have to take them down at some point and re-paint them because I don't think I used enough clear coat to really "seal" the paint and prevent it from chipping. How have everyone else's held up? Did you guys use anything other than a clear coat to prevent peeling/chipping?

Mine are holding up fine now with 3 coats of clear. But if they do end up chippin I'll just take them off and do them again!

Yeah I only put 2 on. I just have the feeling I'm gonna need to take em off and do it again. That glue was pretty damn messy and kinda hard to apply. I broke a plastic fork and used the "tooth" thing to spread the glue around but it still got everywhere.

so works good for me, just took like 10 mins of scrubbing
try lighter fluid and see how that works though.

I'll be taking out those two to paint them, anyone know what paint to use to paint the licence plate thing? the top of mine is peeled.

The lighter fluid worked like a charm. Just put it on an old t-shirt and held it over the adhesive to let it soak in. Then put some more on the shirt and rubbed at the glue a little bit and it came off right away when I picked at it with my nail.

Yeah man I'll get some tomorrow. The phone on my Blackberry blows but I'll try to get one from further away that shows how they look. I'm really OCD though and I think I'm gonna take them back off later this week and re-do the paint. Does anyone know of a good product that you can spray over paint in order to like protect it and "seal" it? Sorry I can't think of any other way to put it. I chipped a small piece off of the Toyota from just barely scraping it with my nail by accident and I'm worried that a car wash or anything like that is going to strip all the paint off.

What kind of paint did you use? I have seen some outdoor spray paints that are really good with no topcoat. You would just prep the emblems and do 3 or 4 coats of paint, each with the recomended time in between for setting.

This is what I would use except I would still lightly prep the surface with super fine paper. Wash it and then allow it dry completely. You could easily do 4 coats then.
