Blacking Out the Runner's Chrome

in the earlier models...say 2011 where there is a chrome strip around the bottom of the car (front/rear bumper & rocker panel); is it easier just to paint with the strip still on the car....wondering if it's a pain to remove the strip from the car?

just got done removing the front/rear garnish and painted them the last couple weekends. looking forward to blacking out more chrome!

So I've got a silver 2015 LE. Can't decide if I want to do the black emblems overlays on the back or use a black plastidip background under the sombrero and 4runner lettering on the tailgate. Seems the background contrast might work better with silver paint. Wish I didn't suck at Photoshop/etc and could mock up what it would look like.

Already have a guy lined up to do my front chrome pieces in a new plasti dip that's apparently oil resistant (?) while leaving the front sombrero chrome.

I have chrome trim under my windows but my runner being silver I never noticed till your post!

Your rocker panels: custom cut or TE swap or shrockworks kit? I need to do this!!

TE Rear Gate Trim Difference?

So, after living with plastidip covering the chrome trim on my grill and tailgate for a few years, I've decided to get the TE version of these pieces as permanent replacements. As I have a first year SR5 with leather package, I have the rear sonar backup sensors on my bumper. Looking at Toyota parts websites, the TE tailgate garnish indicates "w/o sonar" in the item description. Does anyone know for sure if the TE tailgate garnish piece will fit an early 5th gen equipped with sonar?

Haven't seen this address before, or I missed it: I would like my rear lift gate Toyota emblem and "4RUNNER" badge to match the same grey color of the "TOYOTA" badge that's across my TRD Pro grill. I'd really prefer not to hand mask and paint this as I'm sure I wouldn't like my results. Has anyone seen blackout products that are any color other than black? In particular the grey of the TRD Pro "TOYOTA" grill badge?

Anybody who purchased the SR5 kit for their TE / OR have the black SR5 emblem laying around? I’d love to take it off your hands :)

Check the TSO grill group buy. He’s reproducing the front “toyato” lettering for his repro pro grills and went through trying to find matching paint. IIRC, closest he found was duplicolor grey wheel paint.

I suggest that you buy the black overlays, strip their black paint and repaint them using a close matching grey. I have not seen overlays in any color other than black.

I just bought all the rear stuff online and sprayed it. For the front emblem I had to buy a top part of a grille on ebay. I am sure the other parts are available on the site too, I did see some in black as an option.

Got the others @ toyotaparts.mcgeorgetoyota.com 75432-06030-Emblem
75431-35060-Nameplate

Here is a pic of them sprayed

I need to start the dechroming process soon on my TRDOR. It came with those ugly chrome side steps (damage multipliers), and I'll be removing them today or tomorrow. Mine isn't lifted, so they aren't even necessary.

Has anyone had success with the emblem and 4RUNNER logo overlays? I found a set on Ebay that looks to stick right over the existing badges. Thoughts?

A lot of people are happy with the vynil I think, I preferred the real thing so I bought replacement symbols and letter and sprayed them the color I wanted.

Switching out LE handles for black TE handles

I have a 2010 Limited with the touch sensor door handles and really wanting to switch out the chrome for the black TE handles. I have a BP so this is just one phase of my chrome delete – plus I don’t trust myself with painting AND I’ve tried plastidip but doesn’t hold up very well since I touch the handles on a daily.

I understand that the TE handles do not have the touch sensor so I’d have to part ways with this feature – which isn’t a big deal for me. I’ve seen some threads on here explaining how to remove the inside door panels and switching out the outside door handle but I’ve had no luck removing of the main handle (the part without the key hole).

I’m thinking the LE door handles might be slightly different from the rest because of the sensors? Has anyone with a LE have any info on this?

I'm looking to take off my chrome and paint them matte black. I'm tired of plastidip and don't know how to do vynil. Does the bleach process work well enough to remove the chrome?
I'll probably put a primer on then spray paint, but I'm thinking of doing Rhinoline on the chrome. Anyone done that?

Pearl

I just picked up a 2011 pearl white sr5, looking to get rid of the chrome. Can anyone who has done this to pearl white post a couple of pics. Not sure how the black would contrast with the white, I am running black trd wheels as well. Thanks!

There's a video on You Tube demonstrating the process using a degreaser. The one they use is about $5 on Amazon, but I presume other degreasers will work as well.

Good luck!

Just replaced my chrome front emblem with black ordered from ebay. Thought I ordered the overlay, but it wasn't. Got to do that back next, any recommendations on rebadging the letters (How to keep them straight)

I took every other letter off and held a straight edge up against the bottom of the remaining letters and carefully aligned the new letters. Then did the same with the rest of the letters. It was pretty easy.
