Blacking Out the Runner's Chrome

Steering Wheel Emblem removal

while this thread pertains mostly if not entirely to the exterior pieces, has anyone blacked/grayed/restyled their steering wheel emblem? plastidip would work well i'm sure, but i would want to do some pretty extreme prep work to eliminate over-spray inside.

is it adhered to the wheel with some type of 3M or glue? are there pin holes behind it?

if so, i also thought it would be cool to remove and replace it with something like the "TEQ" emblems

BUMP! I too am curious about this... Has anyone done this?

i have done the research. The stock emblem is plastic welded behind the airbag cover so to remove it you will have to cut the 8-9 posts that go thorough the cover. To reattach a TEQ or similar emblem you would need a strong adhesive to withstand the force of the airbag whipping that emblem up to explode the bag open....possibly creating a mini rocket projectile right at your face during a collision.

There are some Chinese overlays on ebay but they are poor in details (where the corners of the T meet the oval) and fitment will be questionable.

Also, through experimentation I have confirmed 99% ALCOHOL WILL REMOVE THE PLASTI-CHROME on the steering wheel emblem so be careful with that. A diluted alcohol ratio may not but 99% definitely will mess it up.

I don't judge trying to black out a 4Runner, but the chrome trim comes at a premium. I can tell on my driver's side chrome door handle, I've had birds land on it as a perch because it's scratched up some.

I like the blacked out look you get with TRD packages. I know at least one Toyota distributor that does a lot of custom TRD packages (adding aftermarket mods before selling new Toyotas). I'm not sure all distributors have that option available due to contracts.

So does anyone have any up close pics of overlay on? Specifically the TRD off road emblems.I am debating on getting the overlay kit or just trying to dip it.

Looking for blackout emblems for 2020 4runner trd premium

Hi new here not sure how these forums work. I searched for blacking out the emblems and came up with this thread.

Is anyone making emblems for the 2020 4Runners yet? The 2020 have a chrome strip on each side of the front logo and I haven't seen any kits that include these. I can get an existing kit and I can just deal with covering up those strips later. All the videos I have seen of applying the emblems look like they cover up the logos entirely, I found a kit for cheap off ebay that said it works for 2014-2020 and they only stick on top, don't cover them up at all. I can still see the chrome. They are cut the exact size not slightly larger to completely cover over. I am sending those back... I was wondering if anyone knew who is selling them. Or has links to where I can get them. I called the dealership where I bought my car and they said that they are so expensive there I am better off with 3rd party/Ebay etc. Thanks for the help. I have a 2020 TRD premium off road.

I got the blackout overlays for my 2018 ORP from Mc George Toyota. They were about $80, and they fit real well. I didn’t want to monkey around with plastidip or paint. Now it seems they are around $125 for the 2020 models.

Good luck with your search.

Tail Light chrome delete

Tail light chrome delete - Has anyone tackled this him/herself? I’m leery of opening up the tail light to paint the chrome pieces, but I’ve heard of this being done. Does anyone know what is involved or have suggestions and recommendations??

So, I’m finally getting around to blacking out the chrome on my 2015 Limited. I’ve got the roof rails at powder-coating and I’d like to start replacing any factory pieces that I can with their matte black counterparts before I think of painting or vinyl wrapping. I looked at getting the rear garnish from a 2019-2021 Pro, but it says it will not fit the Limited. Can anyone verify? It’s got camera and smart key the same as my limited, so I’m not sure why it wouldn’t work. Part number is 76811-35380.

I suppose I’ve tried a variety of ways to black out chrome now. Most recently, I tried my hand at plasti dip. It came out well, so we’ll see how durable it is. The front chrome has been vinyl wrapped or covered with the Heritage Grille (CTH knock off). The roof rails have been powder coated. I might try covers for the door handles.

You can take the chrome off completely without damaging the plastic if you let them sit in a tub of bleach for a few days. Strips the chrome and leaves the plastic underneath for painting either DIY or by a body shop

Where to order white exterior door handle covers

Dood....... probably be easier to just pm me for individual parts that you want to take off one at a time and I'll help you. How mechanically inclined are you?

I'd have to write a book to explain it all at once. They are all plastic clip on except the door handles, lift gate emblem and roof rack. The back piece with the 4-R-U-N-N-E-R logo is very hard as you have to take the lift gate apart.

The front and rear long strips can't come off unless you remove the bumper covers to reach the clips so easier to do them on the bumper.

Can anyone point me in the direction to order white exterior door handle covers for my ‘11 4Runner. Thanks in advance

Do you have a link for the CTH knock off you used? The ones I'm seeing say they won't work for the limited. Thanks

Black door handle covers. I plastic dipped some of the exposed chrome before applying the handle cover :-)

I know it’s a long shot, as this was a few months ago, but did you pull the trigger on the 76811-35380 tailgate garnish?

I’m looking to do the same thing on my 2016 Limited.

Going to use this thread to show off the wifes new SBP limited. She was missing a 4runner, so we sold the Highlander when we found the color she wanted. Got rid of all the chrome and it's ready for some new tires. LMK what you think.
