Not sure exactly, we were running fast and it blew. Probably just a sharp rock. The crazy thing was it was not a sidewall puncture or even through the tread, it went through the entire lug and straight through all the plys. It took about 3 seconds to deflate.

Did you recover the sharp rock? Or is this an assumption? Is the Nitto P-rated or LT-rated. If LT, then what was the Load Range? No, this is not a dig at Josh, but honest questions. This goes back to a point i made on another thread...be careful of tire selection. If you're going to make these desert runs in high heat or over obstacles with sharp rocks, then you better equip your 4runner with proper tires. If your 4runner is heavy, then Load Range C may not be enough...forget about P-rated tires! The off-road instructor that i talked to had a Load Range C blew on him on a FJ because the guy carried a lot of heavy equipment and the tires simply overheated and blew. So, if you guys have this much equipment on your 4runners, then you may want to use Load Range D and up. Again, Josh, you need to get rid of your P-rated Nittos and get a proper tire for YOUR needs. If you're going to be serious about off-roading, then do the right thing...just like how you're changing suspension components to get it right...well, you need to do the same for tires, which is probably the MOST important factor of all your mods!

BTW, this is not the first pic of a Nitto blowing while off-roading...call me bias or not, but i am simply not a big fan of them because of such stories and pics.
 
They are LT, and as far as I know all of Nitto's LT's are E rated (the reason I did not buy them). I will get MT's next, but for now my tires have held up perfectly well.

Yup, that pretty much confirms my suspicion...Nittos are simply not durable off-road.
 
The 285/75/16 size comes in a D rated. I just checked. He switched over to the Nitto's from BFG KO's because of their poor performance, and they got him stuck in the snow. Maybe there just aren't any decent AT's out there.

I am really interested in the new Nitto Trail Grapplers if they come out with a 275/70/17.

He should have been carrying a full sized spare either in back or on his new roof rack. That's one of the first things you should have with you while offroading.

Just to clarify they are P rated, not LT. Also, he is now switching back to BFG's, probably AT's as he doesn't like the MT KM2.

One thing to note...p-rated tires have less tread depth. LT tires have more tread depth...and in that fact alone, LT tires are more puncture resistant.

BTW, did you recover the rock or did you guys assume that something went thru the tread?

We assume it was a rock because right when it happened we hit a section of sharp lava rock at about 70mph. Did not find one though.

To be honest, my guess is that the tire gave out due to improper poundage and heat. As mentioned above, a FJ with stock BFG AT KO Load Range C even popped a tire due to too much weight (aftermarket bumpers, roof rack full of stuff,etc) and heat from death valley expedition.

So, Josh, YOU NEED TO GET NEW PROPER OFF-ROAD TIRES!! Friendly reminder...this has no benefit to me to keep reminding you of this, but you need to be safe out there! Although i don't particularly agree with some of your mods/plans, i also don't want "shit happens" to any of this forum's members.

I would normally agree, but his rig is almost stock weight. The only real extra weight he is carrying is beefier spindles, a roof basket (a pretty light one at that) and a downey skid plate (less than 50lbs).

And in Josh's defense, he is actually looking into good replacement tires currently. He realizes especially with all the extra weight he has added/will add, LT's would be a good investment.

I don't think so either. He probably did tell you that because I was the first person to point out they were LT. He didn't even know.

If the offer is still available I'd like to test out your tires. I can't decide if I want them for my next set.

Definitely is. They will be a little narrower in on your truck unless you get different wheels, but you will get the idea.

It appears that my Nitto's have a higher weight capacity than the KM2's. Is this because they are wider/larger?
