BlairB's 2008 4Runner

BlairB...you may want to do it SOON...so, that we can have some completed pics to...uhhh...showcase your vehicle somewhere.... :D

haha, I will get to it whenever this rain stops. (yes it is raining in sunny SoCal  )

Bump for the new Timbren Bump Stops. OP updated with pics of them vs. stock bumpstops.

They have performed very well thus far.

Hey Blair how much did it cost for the current stuff you have installed for your suspension? Plus dude your truck looks awsome!

Thanks man!

Well I shopped around some and got some parts used from friends, but the prices are as follows

Fox 2.5 Coilovers- $1,400
Camburg Uniball UCA's- $650
Fox 2.0 Adjustable Piggybacks- $600
Icon Vehicle Dynamics Coils- $220
Timbren Bump Stops- $195

So you are looking at roughly $3,000+ before taxes and shipping.

Thanks for the info, now as far as lift, what's the difference from stock? IE.... how big is your lift?

Well if you are just looking for lift, this would be a huge waste of money, but they are adjustable, so its up to you. You would be hard pressed to get less than 3" of lift out of them though, I have almost zero preload on the coil, and am probably at about 3.5", which in all intensive purposes is the maximum amount of lift you would want/be safe with. The rear is probably 2.5"ish, but I honestly dont know for sure.

Where these really shine is a decent amount of improved travel and the resis are good to prevent fading on long fast runs. Even guys without resis usually never experience fading though, you really have to push them hard to have them fade.

Well thanks for the info. From what you've gone through with your series of lift changes I can tell you are a guy like me. Who usually wants the best of things and doesn't want to settle for mediocre. I was just really curious on how much it costs to do it the "right" way instead of just putting in spacers, which I would do but I'd just rather do it the right way. Which looks like you have done!

My wife told me before I spend that kind of money she wants a bigger rock first. lol

It's not that bad, he's only on his 3rd setup.

I would look into getting full Icon when you decide to do yours. They make a great kit including UCA's.

+1 for Icon.

I would get some Camburg or Total Chaos UCA's though, the Icon UCA's are awesome, but almost twice the price.

What a lot of people do is buy their stage 2 kit which has the UCA's included with everything else for a lower price than buying everything separate.

However, right now WheelersOffroad has a special for $1600 for a set of Icon coilovers with Camburg UCA's or $1650 with Total Chaos UCA's. Then with the rear only being about $400 for the shocks and springs together, you are looking at a little over $2K. It's only a couple hundred less than the Icon Stage 2 kit which has the sealed UCA's, but it depends on your price range.

With Camburg or TC UCA's you will have to change the bushings out which runs about $200-ish including the bushings and labor unless you do it yourself. My Camburg UCA's have 8-10K miles on them and will probably need new bushings in another 8-10K or so and Blair's probably needs new ones in the near future, if not already. It all depends on how hard you run your rig. It's something to consider though, because I don't believe that Icon uses bushings on their UCA's, and since they have a sealed top you don't have to worry about getting crap in them like you do with the "open bucket" design of the Camburg and TC arms. They are designed to be relatively "no maintenance."

Now I was looking at Total Chaos's long travel kit either their 2" or the 3" kits. I realize that is probably not needed, for I'm not going to be baja jumping my vehicle, but I'm sure that kit that would help with doing something like that.

So with going to a long travel kit, would that be major overkill? I haven't taken my Runner offroading yet, due to still having the factory Michelines. But I would like to in the future, probably when I need my next set of tires, I'll get some more aggressive tires. I'm sure I won't be rock climbing, but probably more of trail running or going up into the mountains.

Thanks for all the help!

In all honesty, for 99% of people long travel would be overkill. For the mid travel kit (the 2" one) it will cost you over $5k for just the front. The 3" is even more as you have to put fiberglass fenders on. Even though its nice to have (although you will only be thankful when you go FAST) I think there are better ways to put that amount of money towards your truck.

I would try off roading your 4runner some before deciding on what direction you want to go with your build. You would be amazed with what it is capable of in stock form and even though the stock tires are not the best, they will do for the time being. I think ultimately you will be fine with a set of coilovers (Icon, SAW and Toytec are good options) or OME (Old Man Emu).

Personally, in your case, i would just a get a nice set of good tires (Goodyear Wrangler SilentArmor or BFG AT KO or something along those lines) and a pair of rocksliders to protect your rocker panels. And if you're concern about the front end ground clearance, then i would get a smaller 1" spacer lift (+/- FJ springs). That is probably all you're gonna need. Like BlairB stated, the 4runner is pretty capable with these small mods.

Ok guys thanks for the info, I did think that the long travel kit would probably be excessive, but I always like options. So after all your good info, I'll probably just get the tires, maybe a 3/2 lift from cornfed or the 2/1 then some better tires. Plus the sliders. Atleast for now, just to try out, since the cornfed lift is like $250 vs. $$$$.

How about skid plates, do the factory ones suffice for most stuff? Or would that be worth upgrading?

I would start another thread on this topic. However, why not just wait until you destroy the stock skids before considering something else?

If you are going to add skids, then I would re-think the spacers.

As mentioned, I would say it's at the point where a new thread is required to decide your build so Blair's build thread doesn't get cluttered since it's no longer relevant to his truck.

Again thanks guys, sorry to hijack this topic! If I have any more questions you'll see me asking in the Off-Roading Section. But Blair I'll be watching your truck for your future mods!

Again sweet looking truck, I just need to make mine look the same now too!:boink:

Just a little update, I added a Bajarack full factory replacement and light cage today, I will add some non-phone pics in the next few days.

my truck was topless for a little while today....
