Blew a tire on first off road with new 4 runner

Hey Guys:

As mentioned before I got a new to me 2005 4runner. I took it to our hunt camp this past weekend. The road is a logging road from 10 years ago and is approximately 10km long. I could not believe how awesome the 4runner handled the road. Long story short after 5km I ran over a broken culvert and blew my rear right tire. I had the MIchelin Cross Terrain 265/65 17" tires. I am now looking for one tire roughly 50-75% tread wear. Does anyone know where I can purchase one of these tires used. I don't want to purchase a brand new one and then not have the tread match. Thoughts???

...what I would recommend...

I don't know if you have a V6 w/ the selectable 2wd option.

And I'm not sure if you ever use your spare in the rotation as well.

I'll assume you have a V6 & and DONT use your spare in the rotation. I would recommend buying a new tire & putting your spare in play, both on the rear axle & use that good 3rd tire as a spare.

So I would recommend keeping those (2) new tires on the rear & DONT do a rotation, so you can wear them out evenly. Eventually, you'll have (5) tires that have the same tread.

And when the tires wear out...purchase (5)

Since you are new the the 4R and had this incident immediatly, I would evaluate how you are going to use the vehicle going forward...and use this as an opportunity to get appropriate tires for the situations you are going to be in. You will be much happier upgrading now then getting a 50% used stock tire that is going to let you down again when in a similar setting.

A new tire would be fine if the tread depth difference is not more than 1/8 inch.

I am not sure if it was the fault of the tires this time. The old culvert sliced a hole in the side wall of the tire. I am not sure if this would have not happened with any tire. I will be doing this road probably 3 times a year for total of 60km per year.

I could keep the spare on the rear right (which brand new) and put this tire on the rear left. That way I would have two 50-60% on the front and two new on the back. Would this work. I am looking for an answer before noon since I plan to take a drive out at lunch. Please help.

That's probably what I would do too, if I had a V8 & if I'm in your situation.

But wouldn't keep the newer tires in the front make more sense, because you have Fulltime 4WD, and the weight is in the front, front axles do the turning, wouldn't the fronts wear out a little faster than the rears?
