Blew my 03 V6 engine, then I found this...

I just got back home an there was an Amsoil letter on the counter.
I opened it, and guess what........................

Oh Yes........................................ it was............

a beautiful check for the total amount of $4,423.39!!!
They covered every cent I put into replacing the engine, including towing, labour and parts.

Thanks to Amsoil for honoring their warranty without causing me too much grief (apart from wrecking a nice weekend in the mountains and making my toyota look bad).

Ok now I gotta go cash that thing before its void...

While slow kudos to Amsoil! :bigok: It sucks they were so slow but good for them for doing the 'right thing'. My guess is they are talking seriously about how to get the service bulletins out to the field.


Anybody/company that truly puts their money where their mouth is rocks. I have been a longtime customer, more for gear lubes and trans fluids than engine oils, but I will continue. In fact I'll go out of my way to continue to use their products.

That's great news and really great to see a company step up like that. I have been using their oils and other fluids but not their filters. I'll probably stay away from the filters for awhile... there are a lot of good filters around anyway.

Their manual transmission fluid is amazing btw. My 07 Civic started getting a little bit of the 3rd gear wall they are infamous for around 18,000 miles so I swapped the Amsoil in it. I was very skeptical but it instantly changed that transmission for the better.

Anyway, that's great you got everything taken care of and a fat reimbursement check. They should have hooked you up with a t-shirt too! :bravo:

Yes I bought it used it had 120K Km's on it at the time. It Blew up at 190K and I had been using the EA057 and 0W-30 Signature series from the start...

from the looks of the engine in the pictures I bet the engine was sludged out.
I also have used the 57 filter without issue but I try and use them on engines that are not sludged out.
the 57 is a 3/4 thread, many many other filters fit the same thread like the EAO 34 that one will work also it is a bit taller but same OD.

problem with the 57 and Toyotas is your example to the T used sludged engine with too small a filter to catch the sludge and flow enough capacity, small filter just cant do it.
If you had changed that filter at 10,000 miles you may of had a different result.
I always cut open filters to determine current engine condition so I wont get myself into a mess.

I just gained a lot of respect for Amsoil. I always thought they were one of the top 3 oils anyways, but this shows they have that good 'ol American integrity that so many companies don't anymore.

This is why I always stick to OEM parts. All of the problems I've encounter on the vehicles that I have owned were caused by so called performance parts. I know I'll take some flak for this comments but its a fact, OEM parts are thoroughly tested and therefore superior to aftermarket. Hopefully things will work out for you.

Could you give more information about your ownership and maintenance history? I know you said you had 68k miles at the time the engine tanked. Did you buy it new? Did you change the oil and filter according to Amsoil's recommendations? How far between changes was that?

It is good news that you will get the repairs paid for!

I bought the truck with 10k and then converted it to Amsoil. I change the oil myself and on this particular filter I only had 12k on it! I had only three more months left until the 1 year recommended oil change date.

Maybe a little off topic, but I've got a 4.0 V6 in my 03 4Runner. I bought a couple of oil filters at the dealer one time & the guy at the parts counter told me "Never put anything but a Toyota oil filter on your 4 Runner." I just went on & got to thinking about it later. Well, next time I was at a Toyota dealer near my work (buying more oil filters), I asked a parts guy there why the big deal to only use a Toyota oil filter. He opened the box & pointed up inside to a baffle inside the filter. He said the baffle holds oil in the filter so that there's oil readily available for the top end of the engine on startup. He said it may not make a big deal if there's a momentary lack of oil here or there, but over the life of my 4Runner it will cause the hard engine parts to wear unnecessarily. Many oil filters may cross-reference to fit the Toyota, but not all have the baffle (maybe not designed to be installed in an inverted fashion as the 4Runner is).

After talking to him, I remembered using a Wix oil filter on one oil change interval (5000 miles), and when I took the filter off, no oil came out. Obviously the Wix did not have the baffle... Every time I take my OEM filters off, oil runs out of the filter. So, it makes sense that the OEM filter does make a difference!! Also, the OEM filters are $5.00 each + tax... Small price for the peace of mind. I'll buy OEM filters. Almost doesn't make sense not to in my book. Just my .02 ! :thumb3:
