**I am not allowed to have a ton of pics in the original post so most are links, SORRY!**

Hey guys! for a while I have been putting together pictures and details for a build thread of my '98 4Runner and I'd like to share it with you!

From purchased to Turbo is approx. 1.5years.

Vehicle is a bone stock '98 4Runner Limited
V6
4x4
Rear diff lock
Clean title
244K miles

Purchased private party with a broken timing belt. My initial plan was to just get it running again and flip it. Once I got it running I started driving it around more and more and eventually started loving it. And the build began.

The day I bought it.

After removing the timing cover, I found the real damage...

So, the engine needed to be replaced.

This is where the frustrations began. To fit the manifolds, almost all the studs had to be removed. After installing/removing/installing/removing I realized that the bottom studs are too long and will not allow the manifold to sit flush against the head. The angle of the runners will not allow a bolt to be installed in its place. So, I had to research and source shorter studs..

The next issue. The crosspipe did not fit correctly. I battle a nasty exhaust leak for a few days. I found that the crosspipe v band flanges would not clamp together. The cross pipe needed to be twisted a bit to fit flush on both driver and passenger sides. Another annoying this was that the v band flanges did not want to sit even with each other... It took a lot of patience to get them tight and even. I emailed CX Racing about the issue and their resolution was, "use some silicone." .. Needless to say I ended up cutting the crosspipe and re-positioning how it attached.

Wasn’t pumped to click through 100 photo links but DAMN this is thorough! Well done man, and thanks for reminding me why this is so seldom done. You overcame a ton of obstacles to get to this point.

wow... what an amazing transformation... i can only dream of the day my engine bay looks like that... awesome work..

Thx for sharing

Busy guy.

What did you do with AC stuff for the IC? The receiver drier need to be moved? Did you need to cut radiator support to route IC lines?

How are you monitoring AF to know it’s leaning out? Any comments on using stock ECU vs stand-alone?

It was nice to see the TRD wheels get painted even better when you got your new ones.

How the hell does the cam gear snap off???

Comments on turbo vs SC for these? I’d guess ‘ease of install’ you found some differences.

Nice work

The high pressure AC line was simply bent where I needed it. I could not get the low pressure one to bend.

I did move the drier.

The radiator support was cut at the yellow lines

I have an AEM wideband to monitor AF readings.

I believe the cam gear snapped due to low oil/neglect

So far I feel that the turbo is way more powerful then the supercharger. IMO: the turbo at 0 PSI feels like the supercharger did at around 4 PSI. Supercharger initially took about 5 hrs to install vs the turbo took a couple weeks and fab work.

thx for sharing the info Sean.

how do you know when it's closed or open loop?

wouldn't open loop adjust AF based on o2 and correct itself? i would think closed loop would be at risk of out of tune, but the open loop corrects? what do you have planned to correct? how lean?

Open vs Closed loop is easier to see with a wideband, during cold start (open loop) the rpm's are up and it has a rucher fuel mixture.

During open loop I have noticed that the fuel will fatten up going into boost. Closed loop is where the issues arise. Closed loop takes reading from all your sensors and tries to keep your afr's as close to 14.7 as possible. This is not good under boost. From my readings I am seeing low to mid 15's at 1PSI and 16 and up at 2PSI. For the time being I am staying at 0PSI and under.

ATM I am thinking I will try the o2 sensor calibrator from URD. It skews the sensor reading and tricks the 4Runner ECM into thinking it is lean so in tern it will fatten up the fuel mixture. I put a 4PSI spring in the wastegate so I feel that the o2 sensor calibrator will compensate for that amount of boost. From there I will probably buy a manual boost controller and slowly increase boost while adjusting/tuning the o2 calibrator until I find its limits. After that I will probably buy a water meth kit.

Update: The other day while driving I noticed that at about 25% throttle and 1PSI the AFR's would drop to low 13's. Anything more on the throttle and it would go lean. Anybody else see something like that?

I decided to check the TPS, it OHM'd out good and the voltage sweep was good..

Anywho, I pulled the trigger on a URD mass air flow fuel and timing calibrator on the a** end of cyber Monday. So, we'll see how it goes!

Hello again, just thought I would update.

Since re-arranging the pre-MAF piping, I did not see any improvement.

I had ordered the URD calibrator but then decided to back out of the sale after 6 days without tracking.

I ended up buying an FIC6 and AEM 320lph pump. About 2 weeks ago I wired in the FIC and started playing with the tuning. I was able to enrichen until about 2psi and then I noticed it would still go lean after that. After dicking with the tuning I maxed out the injector pulse for anything above 2psi and maxed out the 02 skewing after 2psi. Still went lean...

This last weekend I found some time to install the fuel pump and BLAM, she is now as rich as can be! Guess the 20 yr old pump couldn't keep up.

I have also been fighting my knock sensors, I started getting a P0325 whenever I would enter boost. For kicks, I tied in the working sensor into the bad sensor. It worked for a couple days, but now I am getting both knock sensor codes... ugh... So after work today I ordered the GM knock sensors (Duralast SU1075). Should cure that.

Also, after leaving Autozone I managed to hit 15PSI... with a 4PSI WG spring... lol What a trip, good thing my fueling has been pig rich. Now to start chasing that issue...

Pic of the half was wired AEM.

Wow, Sad you had to replace that Motor! A few Questions...

Currently working on fueling now. Will update as progress is made! :bounce:
I am fairly new with the 3.4. I thought the Timing Belt was a "Non Interference" set-up. What do you think went wrong here? I'm trying to learn as I'm on the hunt for my first 3rd Gen 4Runner.

Thanks for this post, I'm still soaking it all in!

They are non interference. Usually no damage from broken timing belt.

Id guess The cam seized from oil prob and sheared from belt?

You could always just split your post across 3 or 4 posts that is what we all do. Create a few posts below my comment and Mark them reserved.

Glad you got the new pump in! Makes a world of a difference doesn't it? I didn't see you had a thread over here instead of over on customtacos.com. Nice to see some photos!

If it helps, I have my AEM tuning notes and screenshots of some of my maps in my build thread. Although I kept changing it until a few months ago, so it's not quite the same values but they are close.

The 5vz is a non-interference engine. The reason it less loose is due to a lack of oil change and lack of oil in the engine, causing a cam to weld itself to the head, then breaking the timing belt and cam gear.

Glad you got the new pump in! Makes a world of a difference doesn't it? I didn't see you had a thread over here instead of over on customtacos.com. Nice to see some photos!

Pump made a HUGE difference, I have serious fuel pressure now lol I see 50psi at idle. I have been considering making a thread on Customtacos.com, I have been posting there a lot about my issues. They seem to have more "performance" info.

I appreciate the offer on the tuning notes, I spent a couple hours today taking some notes, skewing o2's and pumping fuel at different RPM. Tested out the map and I am seeing low 12 AFR's until open loop, then it seems to go 10 flat lol
