Looks like your question got cut off. Do you really want it to be able to engage at any speed? I would think that could be a pretty big shock to components.

It does stay engaged when you go above 5mph

I agree with rkntoy, engaging it much further above 5 mph is asking to break something when gears are trying to lock together that can cause a lot of grinding if your not going slow.

If I'm off the gas and not doing anything much it should be fine. Not going to do it on pavement, at high speeds, going around a curve, going over major bumps, or anything stupid. Just don't want to have to slow down to 5 mph to turn it on. If it was 15 or so that might not be so bad, I wouldn't do it going more than 30...

Not being snarky...what are you doing at 15 mph that you need to lock the rear for?

Granted, I can see it being a riot in snow for drifting but...

You definitely don't want your power train under load while engaging diff lock. The axles will be spinning at different speeds and could cause costly problems.

I don't understand why people would want to engage something so important at any speed ? Slow to a full stop. Turn it on and proceed slowly till it engages.

I’d have to agree with everyone before me. Our lockers are not like ARB lockers that can be engaged at any speed without causing damage. You might be fine but I wouldn’t risk breaking something just because you don’t want to slow down and engage on the fly. The grey wire mod on the other hand is the best mod I’ve done (and cheapest). To be able to have your locker on at any speed and in 2wd is a huge bonus. I rarely even need 4wd for 90% of the trails I do as long as I have my locker engaged. As soon as I hit dirt I lock the rear, every time.

I would not engage at anything over 5mph, it will, but I wont, I usually come to a complete stop or just barely rolling.
I too am set up to be able to lock it in 2wd, and I agree with above, now a lot of my back road driving is just in the locker, in summer, in winter snow back roads, 4wd and locked

Quite ignorant about this mod still, but I thought I had read somewhere that the "grey wire" mod for us is actually a blue/red wire, right? The one that allows access to the factory rear diff lock in all modes, not just 4 low...

On the Tacoma it's a grey wire, thus the name, I believe.

Appreciate the clarification.

Blue/Red removes the safety requiring 4LO

Green/Orange removes safety requiring 5 MPH or lower to engage.

Thanks for the succinct reply.

Blue/red I will for sure do, maybe even in a bit. Looks to be under the driver side kick panel, within a black box...

Thanks again.

I'm usually cruising seasonal roads around 40ish, so slowing to 5 if I'm coming up on a mud hole is not very productive. I guess I could just turn it on when I hit the trail and leave it on, or if I don't want to slow down just don't use it. Hell I do most everything in 2wd without the locker right now and haven't gotten stuck, but I haven't done much in mud yet.

I have snow tires and barely touch 4wd lol. Running the Altimax and love them. If I do put it in 4wd I can mat it and don't spin a tire. Bout the only time I use it is either when I need to get out in traffic or I want to pass somebody quickly.

I did this mod a while back if it relates to locking the RR diff lock in 2W or H/L4W.............no issues but I would not recommend engaging/disengaging the RR diff lock while you are moving at all IMO. BTW, I run a 5 speed stick shift. Drives great in 2WD with diff locked in heavy snow but be careful on the turns speed dependant.
Grey wire mod was the original reference I think?

So yesterday I attempted the mod. I found the blue/red wire under the kick panel on the drivers side, cut it and touched both sides to ground, 1 at a time then both, but nothing changed the flash of the locker light except putting it in low. So with the wire cut the switch worked like normal.
The blue/red wire I cut goes into the black box under my seat, is that the right wire?

The Blue wire w/ red stripe comes from the black box by the driver's side kick panel. You want the ground the side that comes from the plug. Found a pic for reference. Also just to double check, did you try driving and turning to get the locker to engage? The light will flash until it engages.

locker on, 4wd off, I forget if blue mod is the 4lo bypass or speed bypass. I did the 4lo bypass. yea, I wouldn't do the speed bypass.
