BMW Z Series

Are the Z3 and Z4 BMW basically the same vehicle? I figure a Z4 is the second generation of the Roadster Class? How much are these going for new?

$38K - $50K for the Z4 and they stopped making the Z3 in 2002 but the prices now range, in my area, from $10K - $25K.

Friend of mine from my last job has a Z3 Roadster. Pretty quick little thing, but I was not really impressed with it overall. His convertible top's rear window hazed over quickly, and then started seperating from the convertible top completely. He had it held in place with duct tape. Looked awful redneck. I did some state inspections on a few and they were the most akward cars to get in and out of, and the gearbox felt clunky.

And honestly, the best gearbox I've felt for being smooth and precise, was in a Mazda Miata, even though I despise them for being so ugly. It was an amazingly smooth driving car. Shame it's been beat with the ugly stick more than once.

Two totally different cars. The Z3 was a parts bin of a vehicle. The front suspension is out of the E36 (95-99 3 series) and the rear suspension is out of the E30 (88-94 3 series). It doesn' t have the best fit and finish of a BMW. It was the first BMW built out of Germany.

The Z4 is all E46 (2000-2006 3 series). Much better fit and finish, but it sure is UGLY!

All that being said I have a 2001 BMW M Z3 Coupe. A lot of people said those are ugly too.

I never thought they were ugly, they're decent looking cars. Just the build quality and overall feel wasnt what I would expect from a beemer....... I would expect alot more attention to details if I were paying that much for a tiny little car like that.
