Body rust advice

So the only body rust on my 98 is the passenger rear fender well. Anyone have experience with rust in this area and how to fix it? Truck runs like a top so I'd like to fix it before it gets worse...

I've got a similar problem and would like to hear input as well. My guess would be to sand out the rust, apply body filler and sand, then prime and paint.

fix it like diesel dog sez but I would also want to understand the cause. Is it roadsalt that went unwashed too long or bad job in that area somehow from toyo or what?

How does this happen, on the beach all the time? Or never washed after salted road driving? In texas only if it lives year round on the beach could this happen....

Looks like once you cut/grind away the rust, you will have s nice small hole so I would do just that, and weld a patch in place.

The proper way to go at it is to cut the rust out and weld in a patch. I would get it professionally done. DIY bodywork never comes out well IMO.

I have worked around boats and saltwater for a lot of years. Trying to stop rust is a constant effort. If there is any loose rust, scrape it off. There is a commercial product called Ospho that will neutralize the rust and turn it black. I found a similar product made by Kleen-strip called Phosphoric Prep & Etch at Lowe's or Home Depot. It comes in a gallon plastic jug and wasn't expensive. I pour some into a glass pickle jar and use a cheap disposable brush to apply it. It will blacken the rust and remove the stain. I leave it overnight and touch it up with some paint the next day. I use it on everything that has rust. I just used it today on my trailer rims and tractor deck. I wear protective glasses and gloves. DON'T LET IT DRIP ON YOUR SKIN! IT IS VERY CAUSTIC AND WILL IRRITATE YOU SKIN! WEAR SAFETY GLASSES OR GOGGLES!
