Bolts sheared off of LBJ

Well I was at the Gulches off road park for the majority of the weekend really beating on the 4runner as usual, this time no breakages!

I came back and thought I would check up on my buddy's property out of boredom, well I was making a slight turn to leave the the LBJ let loose.

I knew something wasn't right before hand, but it was so over grown I couldn't get underneath, the steering was really tight and I was hearing some odd grinding.

I only found 1 sheared off bolt there, and I looked pretty good. Which means I drove 5 hours with probably just 1 or 2 LBJ bolts.

Pretty big disaster, but we were able to get one bolt in and with the help of a ratchet strap get it to the trail head to be towed home.

I am going to try and do the easy out thing on the sheared off bolts in the spindle, then get new LBJs and some grade 8 bolts from Fastenall

Sorry really don't have any close ups, 3 bolts are sheared off in the spindle, I will see how the easy out goes tomorrow. If not I will take my chances with a used spindle.

The front fender is OK, the flare is bent out, but I should be able to fix it

The stock bolts aren't grade 8? I just bought stock bolts with my ball joints assuming they were but I didn't check the markings.

And were the bolts re-used and/or installed by a shop. My $10 says the bolts were either reused several times, or overtorqued. These things shouldn't fail like that if handled properly...

And you all thought I was crazy for always buying new bolts...

Don't people find it odd that these things typically fail at low speed? I guess in that regard it's a good thing.

I re-used my bolts because at the time it's all I had. It's on my "to do" list to get new, or potentially better ones.

just get new ones, don't worry about "better". Even bolts are an engineered part.

Not me bro, I got all new OEM bolts from the dealership, and they were not cheap...

The bolts and ball joints are less than 5 months old bought from Fred Anderson Toyota down the street. The previous owner did them right before I bought the vehicle. I am guessing they were over torqued

Hmmm, This would be my suspicion too. Did the PO do them himself, or have the dealer do it?

Threads like this make me want to check over every single 'nook and cranny' under my truck. Now I have to worry on my way home, thanks a lot!

Joking aside, glad it wasn't any worse. I'm hoping I don't have to go through this. Just goes to show you how important it is to apply the correct torque to specific bolts and apply thread locker when needed. I can't tell you how many times I've undone those 4 bolts to change out cv's or to work on the suspension. I need to hop off my lazy boy after work and change out all my ball joints and bolts to grade 8 if I'm going to continue my path of wheeling. That or just chop it all off for a SAS

I get employee discount there, so maybe that could be of some help? As far as bolts, discount for sure, but I dont know if a warranteed replacement could be done, as it wasnt the ball joint that failed... Just the fasteners.

What part of Raleigh? I live in Garner, right off White Oak/Jones Sausage by the Target.

ARK...yea it makes me a lot more cautious too, I will now start doing really intricate overview of the vehicle after each wheeling trip. It could have easily happened on the street, so I am lucky it happened in nice soft soil

your just rackin up those AAA tow trips arnt ya lol, im assuming no close up pics of what broke? lol and i just got done saying how awesome your truck was looking at gultches over at NCFJ and now i see you shearing bolts on grass? haha just kiddin buddy. Def. glad it didnt brake on the trip home that would've certainly been worse.

The easy out didn't work because some of the threads were boogered because a bolt sheared off inside.

you know I don't think I've ever had a bolt break or shear off that an easy out would actually work on lol I've used them for broken light bulbs and broken steel pipe fittings but never been successful with using them on broken bolts I just skip right to drilling and rethreading Unfortunately. if u have any problem sourcing parts holler I'll see if I can help latr yo!
