Both cigarette lighter in the front and back doesn't work

Hello All,

My first post here although I have been lurking on this forum for a while hehe.

Well I have a bit of a problem with my 2004 4Runner cigarette lighter. Both cigarette lighter in the front and back do not work... Radio, Horn, lights everything are still working so I don't think it is the fuse problem. I called dealer and they said it will cost me $99.50 for "diagnostic".

I did open up the cover on the front to take a look at the cigarette lighter connection and it looks ok to me. I also did read some other posts saying I need to replace the whole socket (dealer quotes $22.50) for me. What do you guys think might be the problem?

If I remember correctly, when I was looking at the fuse map in the manual, there was one labeled 'cig'. That might be one to try too...

The cigarette lighter fuse is for the optional lighter. You want the 15A PWR OUTLET fuse in the interior fuse panel. See the attached diagram.

Good news Gents... yesterday I was persistent (Without the electric outlet, I don't have GPS and using GPS on my iPhone is defintely not an option lol) so I decided to take a look at the fuse diagram once again and I found there is one labelled Power Outlet. I don't know why I keep thinking the cigarette lighter is combined with the ACC but it does not appear to be the case. I took the fuse out with my plier and sure enough a big burnt black mark appear on the fuse. I went to Radioshack and replace it right the way =).

Thank you very much for all the suggestions. Not only this forum save me money from the blood sucking dealers, it also gave me ideas to what mod I want to apply to the car lol. Yiipeee~

It is probably a fuse. I believe the fuse is located on the left side (drivers side) of the foot well behind a plastic finish panel. You mention the cigarette lighter as not working. Most 4Runners didn't actually come with a cigarette lighter, it was an option. The socket next to the shifter, and in the rear compartment are just 12vdc accessory outlets, and will not function as a cigarette lighter. They are fed from a 7.5 amp fuse in the upper right of the mentioned fuse box (2nd from the top on the right). There is a 10 amp fuse just above it which feeds the cigarette lighter, if you had one.

i have an 04 and both cigarette power outlets don't work. i checked the fuses under the dash and under the hood and all seem to be fine. any suggestions. i'm trying to hookup a portable dvd player for my kids. i plugged it into the a15v a/c plug in the console using an adapter and it powered right up. i can't use that adapter cuz it's for my cooler. please help.

I didn't know that there's a cig lighter in the back. The only cig lighter i know of if you bought the cig lighter + 1 accessory.

When you say you "checked the fuses", did you actually pull the power outlet and cig fuses in the driver side interior panel? They won't always go black when they blow, but you can usually see the broken filament by holding them up to the light. You could also check continuity with a DMM. There should also be a spare fuse or two in the block under the hood that you could just plug in to confirm.

Assuming good fuses and ignition on (the outlets are switched), you probably have a shorted wire somewhere between the batter and the first outlet. Any work done like a stereo install that might have jostled some wiring?

This actually happened to me - twice. Too bad, I didn't searched around before I bought this Griffin iTrip phone charger.

I contacted Griffin and they sent me an updated version of the iTrip for free, I just had to send the old one back to them. I suggest you do the same because my new one has had no issues.

This is great advice. I was having a very difficult time figuring out why my "power outlet" wasn't working, checked all the wires, the cigarette lighter fuse was fine, couldn't figure anything out. I read this post and changed the 15amp fuse in the front dash labeled PWR and it was blown. Replaced it with the spare in the engine compartment and the front and rear 'power outlets' work fine now. Thank man!

It's happening because the charger is pulling too much power for that circuit and the fuse is doing exactly what it should-- breaking the circuit by burning out.

Even though this thread is long since answered (thanks for the answer! I was "tricked" by the CIG fuse and didn't bother to pull the rest.), I know it will be searched thousands of other people looking for answers.

Lets start simple. An electric circuit is called "circuit" because it's literally a circuit or loop of wire leading to and from the power source(s) with various devices attached. As electrons flow on the wire, they cause the wires to heat up. The more of them that flow, the more the wire heats. This flow is called Current and is measured in Amperes (the A that appears on fuses).

Thicker wires can endure more A before overheating. Engineers, for cost, weight, and space savings, use the smallest wires possible for any given circuit. Each wire loop (or "circuit") is rated for a certain flow of electricity (A) before there is a risk that the wires will overheat and burst into flame*.

The fuse is designed to melt at a lower current than the circuit it is connected to. This is an engineering principle called Known Point of Failure. By intentionally designing a weak spot in a place that is easy to service, it saves the hassle of having to search the entire circuit length looking for a point of failure.

Thats why you should never, ever replace a fuse with one of higher rating. Instead of burning up a cheap fuse (that's also easy to find), you will burn up the wires that connect the fuse and powered devices together. If the device(s) plugged in are burning out the fuse, they simply drawing too much power for that circuit and you should try less/other devices.



* When wires "burn up," typically it's just the insulating wire jackets that burst into flame (which can sometimes ignite other nearby objects and set your car/house fully ablaze). It is possible for the wires themselves to actually ignite but thats unusual.

Still lost on this issue

I have tested all of the fuses, pulled the dash and checked the well and made sure I was getting power. With a circuit tester, I get power . I assume one side is power, one is ground or do both sides of the plug get power?

'04 Limited - Same Issue

Hey all, sorry to resurrect an old thread, but figured that was better than starting a new one.

I have the same issue. Both "cig" adapters are out. I checked the "ACC" fuse (7.5A) and the "CIG" fuse (10A) before finding this thread. And by "checking the fuse", I had the key on and checked for power at both sides of the fuse.

I saw the posted schematic (thanks for that), but could not locate the 15A POWER fuse. I do have a 30A power fuse, but that is for the power windows, which work...so I don't think that's the correct one. I also could not find the "DC SKT" relay, so I'm wondering if that schematic is from a different Gen.

OH, and I looked in the fuse block in the engine compartment and couldn't find anything that might work.

Would appreciate your thoughts, I'll keep looking. I have the inverter, and that works...so not a huge rush, just wanting to get my rig working like it should. Figured this would be an easy one.

Never mind. I'm stupid. I was so focused on finding a 15A "POWER" fuse, that I completely missed the 15A "PWR OUTLET" fuse.

Works now. Sorry for the interruption.
