Brake issue, please help

I'm having a brake issue and I can't find any info on it.

After being at a red light or a stop sign when I lift off the brake and move over to the gas pedal to start going I feel what seems to be possibly the brake popping off like it was sticking. It happens pretty much every time. It also makes a sound. When it happens it kinda jerks the whole car. Also it feels like it's in the back.

I've had the garage check it out and they looked at the brakes and fluids. They also kept it for a few days to drive it a little to see if they could produce the issue.

So I'm asking here because nobody can figure out the issue. Anyone have any ideas?

I think I have felt the same thing. That said the truck still slows and stops fine so I'm pretty much ignoring it. I'll put ceramic pads on at the next brake job. That'll likely cure it.

Do a search on driveline thump, clunk, driveshaft slip joint. You will find hours of reading on the subject. It has been a known issue for a LONG time.

Depending on how they did the lubrication, it may take a day or two for it to take effect. This issue is most prevalent just after braking to a stop (especially hard braking). I have noticed that after coming to a complete stop, relaxing the brake pedal, and allowing the vehicle to roll forward an inch or two, the thump/clunk is often lessened or not there at all upon acceleration.

In my 2WD it does it all the time. The driveshaft doesn't have provisions for greasing that I can see, but it has no slip yokes anyway.

The real cause is that the stupid transmission programming tries to throw a shift from 2 to 1 at the very last minute, and by the time it lazily gets around to it, you've already stopped and the clutch packs or whatever can't do their thing (I am not a big automagic transmission guy). So as soon as you slightly move forward, it kicks into 1st violently, and you get a very obvious thunk and feel it.

Come to a stop very slowly and it likely won't do it.

Get a grease gun. Grease the zerks on the driveshafts -- plural, both front and rear. There are zerks at each end of the driveshaft and in the spider joint.

Just to add to M1911's post.

I had recently asked about the two different types of grease recommended in the downloadable manual on the site. There was a change that is not mentioned in the manuals on the site and the lithium grease (or synthetic) is good to go for all points.

The linked thread may cause some confusion on that point.

After some normal driving this afternoon/evening I'm happy to report problem solved! The greasing of the slip yolk and shaft did the trick!!

Also A. Get under the truck and you will find the zerks. You may have to pull the truck backwards and forwards until you can reach all of them.

1 & 2 are the two zerk fittings for lubricating the two universal joints. 'A' is the zerk for lubricating the driveshaft slip joint (which is the cause of most thump/clunk complaints).

Even after greasing the shaft, you guys can't feel the trans bound up and finally clunking into 1st when you inch forward after a faster stop?

IMO, Toyota engineers screwed up on the downshift logic coming to a stop. The shift to 1st should come in a few mph higher so it can happen before the truck is completely stopped.
