Brake lights stuck on

2005 4Runner, V8 95K miles. Had to make an emergency stop really pressing with all my strength on the brake pedal to avoid rear ending someone. Now the brake lights and the HSML won't turn off! Replaced the fuse, filled the brake fluid to the top but I have turned on some brake switch that won't turn off. Removing fuse to keep lights off even when ignition is off.
Anyone with any ideas????? Mystified!

Maybe disconnect battery to get everything to reset? Dunno.

There's probably a brake light switch somewhere on the pedal assembly itself and your emergency stop may have jammed it. They're usually a pin-switch mounted on a bracket off the side of the pedal arm near the top.

Ive seen the brake switch on the pedal break many times however ive never seen it stuck on. A lot of force could jam the pin into the housing permanantly. Try disconnecting the switch and see if the lights go off. If they do, replace the switch.

This just happened to me! wtf...?

Except for me, there was no jacking of the brakes today... Just got home, turned the ole girl off only to see my brake lights are still on and won't go off...

Checked fuses, pulled neg bat cable, looked at the trailer harness (looks dry and fresh...). Looked and pulled on the pedal itself, but still the stock/factory/untampered with LEDs refuse to go off....

It's supposed to snow in Pittsburgh tomorrow and I reallllllly would rather take my beloved t4r to work over the wifes g6....

HELP! lol - please.....

*edit - just tried temporarily disconnecting and turning off/etc my fog light mod, and still didn't help... still stuck on.

(oh and for me its just the brake lights being stuck on all the time no matter what - even when ignition is off). Not sure what the HSML or whatever the op was referring to even is.

FYI the computer clearly thinks the brakes are applied as I can shift from park with my foot off the brake pedal....

Not sure if that helps any?

Thanks! It was actually so easy. In the garage about to smoke my victory cigarette now... I'll post pics and the easy solution. (Due to design, this happened far too easily with what was apparently just my foot bumping a switch... Seems like a safety hazard to me... I'll explain shortly.)

First of all, I think using Photobucket, Tapatalk and my EVO for taking, uploading and posting pics is easier than using the PC!

Anyway, in the below pics, you'll see the switch that just got jarred loose. The switch still functions 100% correctly, but is designed such that if its turned 90 degrees, it sort of pops out a bit.

The unit works the opposite as you'd expect. When you push the pedal, the arm that rests on the switch pulls away from the switch and the car thinks the brake is pushed. So with the switch being pulled away slightly, the trigger mechanism was "out" so the car thought the brakes were depressed.

All I did was POP it the rest of the way out so I could figure out what was going on, and then popped it back in there and gave it that crucial 90 degree spin to lock it back in place. Now I just need to keep my size 14's away from it in the future and I should be all good...

Still think its a dangerous design... I just wanted to post what happened on this thread in case it happens to someone else and their search takes them here.
