brake pad going so fast?

Yep, my trusty indy toyota mechanic. I have use them for 20 years and I can trust them. He built my motor and susp. on my first 80 series land cruiser. I saw it when they pulled the rotor. I remember how thick the pas were when i first brought it to them.

I am jsut puzzled at how fast they wore out and was wondering if any of you here have experienced that. I did buy their premium ceramic pads so I am not sure if that made any differences. One thing I do like about that is there is very little brake dust on the rim.

so how thick were they?
 
I learned a loooong time ago to use OEM pads on my toyotas.
They will stop your vehicle as fast as any other pads without fade and last as long if not longer than aftermarket pads!
They were engineered for your Toyota, why not use them?
 
When I was about 17 I drove my parents Ford Maverick (grabber blue no less) to the dentist that had just moved further away. I had to park up a hill (pretty hard to find around Chicago), so I put the parking brake on.

On the way home, I noticed that something was wrong, but couldn't figure it out. I stopped, tried setting the parking brake on and off. Then went home.

Forgot to tell my dad about it.

About two days later I got the lecture from dad about the parking brake, about either you have to use it all the time or none of the time.

Either that, or you do the two-foot granny driving, one on the gas and one on the brake.

Better say it was the parking brake before someone takes away your man card.

there is a lot of truth to that.

if it never gets used, the cables can freeze up, then when you do finally use it, they wont release.

if its used daily, the cables are much less likely to freeze up, thus no issues.
 
Braking style can play a big role in this. People who hit their brakes hard and late, go through pads much faster then those who brake early and lightly. I coast a lot and my Runner still has plenty of pad life left at almost 40k.

Also, just an FYI to those who plan on getting a vehicle with radar cruise in the future: in hilly terrain, you can go through brake pads in less than 10k easily. They actually made us stop using the radar cruise function in the test cars because we were going through a set of pads in less than 2 weeks. $$$$$
 
So you have 3.2mm-4.8mm left. Service limit is 1mm on OEM pads. What do these fancy ceramic pads start out at?
 
Seriously, order the plain old cheap OEM pad. I don't have any brake dust on my rims, I get 70K miles, it stops just fine, it makes no noise. I don't know what else to say. It is not just me either. Most guys here love the OEM pads and OEM wiper blades. You really can't beat them for 3X the price.

If you wear an OEM pad out in 20K miles you have a real problem.


good to know about brake dust with OEM pads. I have 40k on the truck, so the first sets wore in the acceptable mileage, I suppose. I will try OEM. I was told AKabono made OEM pads for our trucks. Live and learn.

I was wondering how and why it wore so fast. it isn't normal and was hoping for some answers here.
 
Never owned a Model T Ford either, what's the relevance to the 5th gen 4Runner only going 7-8k on a set of pads?

Since you said no one changes pads at 7-8k, I brought up the LC. I had a 93 and a 93 LC. The pads will wear out at 10,000 miles on a good stretch. Around town pretty hard driving, they will be gone at 8000 miles. they undersize the brakes on that vehicle. I am thinking they did the same on the 5 gen.

Man card lost long ago. :confused: Its the actual brake pads that are going. Parking or drum brake pads are somehow going. They cable is adjusted to the max. I just don't know how it can wear so damn fast. Even if they rub, it will rib to a certain point and stop and still have pad surface to stop from rolling

Um....have you seen the size of the brakes on this thing? They are not small rotors (over 13") and the calipers are 4 pistons.

These factory rotors/calipers are more than adequate and very powerful, especially for an SUV.

Nah, I'm coming from a 3rd gen that only had front discs, rear drums and they were 100% undersized (one of my only gripes with my '01), but i still got 60-70k out of a set of pads.

The brakes were one of the things that impressed me most in the switch.

Now I'm confused. Both the rear disc pads and the parking shoes are wearing excessively?
I've never adjusted the parking brake cable with drums in disc, who doesn't have self-adjusting brake shoes in this day and age?

So you started at 1/2" (12.7mm), you're down to 3/16" (4.8mm). That's still over 30% left I'd tell your guy to call me when they're at 2mm.
