Brake pad question please

I just purchased new front brake pads, the OEM ceramic variety, for my 2014 Trail. They came with a little packet of grease which I understand is for the shims. I gather it is applied on the side of the shims next to the back of the pad and not the piston side, no? Thank you for any help.

Yeah, between the pad and shim for that stuff. Use silicone paste, Sil-glide, or similar for the slide pins.
I don't think there's a brake job "how-to" in this forum but I like this one from BITOG that emphasizes reducing lateral runout.

You can place small amounts on the backs of the pads and on the tabs. Just stay away from the front of the pad and rotor obviously.
Grease anywhere you see metal on metal contact. That's where squeaks and funny noises come from. Just go easy on it. A little goes a long way.

I use anti seize high temp paste on the brake pad backing plate. this prevents any noise .

the high temp silicone grease is used on the pins/rubber seals , caliper piston seal.

if the silicone grease is not used on these rubber parts the pins/cal pistons will get damaged from corrosion.

do not use brake cleaner on any rubber parts if you do the rubber will fail. also keep away from paint and plastic.
