Suggestions on brake pads OEM OR?

There have been several threads about break pads over the years; and OEM appears to be the best choice overall. They fit right, work well and last a long time and are not that expensive. That's what I'm going with when it's time.

I get NAPA's best pads. I had a Toyota service tech tell me that if they don't have the brake pads for someone's brake job they walk across the street to NAPA.

I tried their cheap stuff and found it not as good. I get their best pads, rotors and calipers and I'm happy with the results

OEM are fine and wear well.

I also like Akebono ceramics. They have a slightly better initial bight that I prefer but is of course subjective.

Akebono ProAct pads. Inexpensive, work well, and do not require a break in procedure. In my experience the OEM pads tend to leave pad material on the rotors too easily causing the "warped rotor" pulsation while braking.

I like Wagner OEX Ceramics made here in the US, no downside.
Spent the last 3 weeks in the backroads twisties and switchbacks of Tennessee and with over 40k miles on them with OEM rotors they were flawless.
Saved my butt on one panic stop.

I may be mistaken, but I believe those Akebono's are the OEM pads used by Toyota. I got them for a fair price on Rock Auto. Bit more than the cheap pads, but worth the difference in price.

I thought the “ACT” series were OEM replacement equivalent but I could also be mistaken.

I use original Toyota parts. I find buying them via the parts internet department are cheaper or same as buying OE. I just purchased all the new Toyota brake parts to do this winter on my 2018 4Runner ORP and can tell you the original Toyota equipment are manufactured by the following companies -

Front Brakes: Advics
Rear Brakes: Akebono
Front Rotors: Advics
Rear Rotors: Advics

From my understanding the TRD pads provide better stopping power but the cons are they produce a lot of break dust, have a shorter life span and are harder on the rotors. They also have a specific breaking procedure. If not done properly they can mess up your rotors.

I don't think TRD pads harder on rotors. These pads are grippier but softer compound and will wear out sooner. Replacing them especially up front is 10 min job. Slightly more dust is true but not bad enough where you will notice from over 6ft away.

x2 on akebono. fronts i just did with duralast gold rotors. feels great so far. kept the stock rotors to have turned when the duralast ones fail. (autozone product shenanigans)

Thanks for the info on the rotors. I was wondering how Toyota made the pads grippier with just ceramics. Usually brake pads with better stopping power usually have some type of metallic materials which wear down the rotors faster. I didn’t know if they were using some other type of material. But if the TRD is still all ceramic then the wear should be the same as the OEM pads
