Brake pedal sticks at top of travel? 2001

My brake pedal has started sticking a little at the top of the travel (near "release" position) as I let off the brakes. It feels like there's a detent or something grabbing a little bit, but will always release.

It only does it if I let off the brakes gradually, like inching forward at a stop light. If I suddenly release them it doesn't stick. It seems to be right where the brake light switch disengages, so I'm going to start there but figured I'd ask if anyone else has run into this before I start tearing stuff apart.

I believe you have ATRAC (electric brake booster assembly). My 2000 Landcruiser has the same ATRAC and the sticky paddle is somewhat common on LandCruisers. I installed another return spring and problem solved.

One of the possible issue is the seals inside the brake master pump sticking with the bore. If you want to fix it correctly, you will need to install the piston that comes with the seal. That will take a lot of time, (probably best to rebuild the ABS motor if removed) and bleed the brakes.

Yes.

The price of OEM brake master pump (entire unit) has come down by 50% lately. IF you plan to keep the 4runner for a while and if the mileage is near 250K, it is best to get a brand new brake master pump from the dealer. Last March there was a special offer for all toyota parts and the price of the pump came down to 1250 from initial 2500+ range.

The repair takes time so if you decide to do just the brake piston, since the unit is out of truck, get the motor rebuild (costs about $300 shipped) from CA. Checkout Eurton Electic in CA.

I had the brake stickiness in my 2000 LC, however after installing the additional spring (also from a toyota brake paddle), I no more experience the sticky paddle. I also have a brand new OEM brake master pump waiting to be installed into LC.
