I took my 2012 LE with 38,500km (24,000mi) in for it's regular oil change. According to the manufacturer's maintenance schedule, I technically should have had my brake service done last oil change. I didn't because my intervals are off and my oil change was before the mileage interval. Long story short, I skipped the brake service at the last oil change. I was told at that time my rear pads were wearing rather quickly. I was surprised based on what T4R.org members were posting about pad life. I had gone thru 50% in under 20,000 miles.
Anyway, I took the 4Runner in this week for an oil change and agreed to pay the additional $100 for the recommended brake service. I am glad I did. My rear rotors were scored and the pads wore unevenly. The dealer replaced the whole rear brakes under warranty and only charged me $50 to cover the brake service for the front. Very happy and glad I followed the maintainance schedule. I must say I did notice slight jerking while braking. Obviously this is why.
The dealer advised the brakes may have went if the 4Runner sat on the lot for a while, which it did as mine was a leftover. They also advised I have 5mm left on the front pads... that still seems short of what a lot of you guys on here are getting.
Anyway, I know some people have posted concerns about brake life and brake wear. I recommend you follow the maintenance schedule and have your brakes serviced!
