Brake System warning Light & VSC and ABS Light

Driving to work today and halfway to work the dash board lights up like a Christmas tree. The Brake system warning light, VSC, and ABS light are all on. Check the brake fluid and it is topped off and have not notice any leaks in the brake system. Just got the rear brakes done about 2000 miles ago, my truck a 2008 4runner sport with 129000 miles. Any ideas what could be going on?

Noticed the brake fluid was not all the way to max line so I topped of the brake fluid it did not solve the issue. So far ever 3000 miles this truck is costing me 400 bucks .

First thing to do is pull the codes and see what the vehicle thinks the problem is.

Will do. I am getting five chimes during start up not sure what that means. I will have to take a run down to autozone.

Heard from shop they stating they need to replace the rear speed sensor on the truck and estimating the work to $918 does that sound right?

Yikes.

A speed sensor, part# 89543-04020, price on partznet: $166.53. This particular one is for LEFT front or rear. I'm not sure how involved replacing a speed sensor is, so..........

Very rare for the actual sensor to go out, its just a magnet. More likely its the cable. I recently had to replace mine, it had basically rotted out where it turns upward from the rear differential. I got an oem cable from amazon for $110, part number is 89516-60090. Its very easy to replace, took me a whole 10 minutes tops. The sensor comes out with one small bolt. You dont need to remove the wheels or even jack the vehicle up to do it.
If it is a sensor, you can get a set of aftermarket ones that everyone seems to have no problems with for $25 for both on amazon.
And that price is absolutely insane. I just had my timing belt, water pump, and a new serp belt done for $900. You could replace both sensors and the cable for ~$135 on your own in a 1/2 hr.

He said that the sensor is part that goes around the bearing. Does that sound right?

Yes its possible. The ABS cables are very easy to break internally, especially after they age and subjected to all the road crap. I managed to f-up both of my front cables when i did my front brakes from letting the suspension hang.

The part that goes around the bearing is just a metal ring with notches, usually known as a reluctor or tone ring... cant imagine how that could go bad, other than possibly coming loose and not rotating at the same speed of the axle.

I would have the cable checked for continuity first before anything else.

it's possible for a ring to get gunked up with magnetic dust. A can of brake clean and a rag would be it. More likely the sensor cable was damaged when the brakes were done.

Try replacing the brake light switch on the brake pedal. That is what caused problems for me. A quick and cheap fix costing less than $15.

I did the same a couple of years ago and no problems since. I also replaced the speed sensor prior to brake switch and lights still came on. Both the speed sensor and brake switch are very easy DIY's.

As an alternative, I purchased the china ones off ebay for about $20 for the pair, so far no issues.

Giving this thread a nice bump!

This morning while driving to the shop to fix another issue, my T4R threw a Check engine light, traction light, and VSC light.

The shop read it, and told me it was a brake switch/ABS issue. Anyone have a similar issue and know the fix?

Without know what code or codes it displayed it's hard to advise you if it's indeed ABS related or something else, have them print out the codes and post them here and we'll see if they're even on the right track with their diagnosis

I would think if it is ABS/brake switch related the ABS/Brake light would be on as well.

Will do! The shop I happened to have it at wanted to charge me $125 diagnostic fee for the codes, so I said nope.

Gonna run it down to a local parts store and get the codes pulled for free and I’ll post em up!

Transmission control module failure . This is located under the dash . A tcm failure can trigger an electrical glitch causing abs failure without throwing any codes even with a healthy abs system. When the lights go on if you can press the break pedal all the way to the floor it’s probably the cylinder of it dosent go all the way and I mean all the way with no resistance then it’s an electrical issue caused by a failing TCM. You can get refurbished as good as new TCM off of eBay for a few hundred bucks. Hope this helps
