Brilliant's Mod Thread

one thing i might suggest on the HAM, carry a spare magnetic mount antenna as a backup. people always ask my why i suggest this and its really quite simple; the big and main reason most people use HAM is its range/distance, you can reach out over 100 miles easily(depending on conditions). so its a safety line/net of sorts, used for emergency. anyhow one of those emergencys could be rolling your vehicle(i know most of us always say it will never happen to me, or i dont wheel it that hard etc but accidents happen -someone could run you off the road) or what happened to Jason Izzard and his 3rd gen a couple years back on a camping trip -tree fell on it almost killing him and his GF. when something like that happens it almost always crushes or breaks your antenna rendering your awesome radio useless. pull out that handy spare magnetic mount, hook it up and you can mount it on the frame, or skid plate or door ect (who cares about your paint now). anyhow sorry for the long winded tip, but its something a lot of back country travelers never do or think about until after something has happened.

Great scenery!

Next time I'm in Seattle visiting my daughter, I'm going to have to look you up so you can show me some of these awesome views.

Definitely, no shortage of scenery in PNW.

that's a good idea. I planned to get a small mag mount for when I don't have the rack on. I didnt consider a roll over or a tree falling, but we know that's possible. I was thinking I'd use it more in case I got stuck somewhere.

Well green didnt last long...

I couldnt find a green HU, so I swapped everything to red. Also the clock I knew I could make red thanks to gottabetrd. The climate control I will have rebuilt in the spring and have amber LEDs put onto the buttons.

Fixed the lights out all over the dash from previous owner.

I thought I would detail post for limiteds since I couldn't find what I needed elsewhere. Lots of posts for SR5s but not limiteds, and I never found a concise one.

Parts List
Cluster - 3 x - Type 24 | T6.5 wedge
Key - 1 x - Type 74 | T5 wedge
Ashtray - 1 x - Type 74 | T5 wedge
AT Shifter – 1 x - Type 24 | T6.5 wedge
Glove Box – 1 x Type 74 | T5 wedge
Rear Window button- 1 x – Type A | T3 8mm Japanese Instrument panel bulb
ECT/Rear Defroster - 1 x - Type A | T3 8mm Japanese Instrument panel bulb
Climate Control – 2 x – Type A | T3 8mm Japanese panel bulbs & 2 x - Type B | T4 10mm Japanese panel bulbs
Flasher - 1 x – Type A | T3 8mm Japanese panel bulbs
Cig Lighter – Custom. I pulled the old bulb out, cut off the housing from a Type 74 so it was bare LED, wires, and resistors. I put it in with a tad of silicone.
Window Switches – Micro LED, requires printed circuit board solder, modified type 74s.

I used superstars with lens covers for the Type 24s for the cluster and AT shifter. The 3 LED ones do not fit, they are too loose (maybe glue them if you want). I used narrow LEDS for all the Typa A & B, dont buy they wide square heads, they will not fit the ECT and rear window button well.

Finally I can see my climate controls!

Puke green/yellow wasn't an option for color match, so I went green.

Note: some trimming of the Type A and B bulb's locking 'slats' had to be done to make them fit. I used a hobby knife and pliers to hold the bulbs.

Where I bought them:
LED Lights, Bulbs & Accessories - SUPER BRIGHT LEDS
www.autolumination.com
Bulb Guide: Automotive Bulb Visual Finder

I had 1 cluster, key ring, ECT, rear window, AT boot, climate controls, and glove box all out by previous owner. All better now. Hopefully this helps other limited owners sort it out what they need, but fix them. Its super easy.

Switches
Today I took this a step further. I wanted to put LEDs in my switches. With aid of some tweezers, I then soldered a wire onto the back of the LED tab to replace the removed resistor. This was a feat of sorts with my std iron, but it is very doable. I would recommend either patience or a smaller tip/iron.

When you unhooked your guage cluster, did it reset your odometer? The trip I understand but the full odometer.

Fire Extinguisher

Objective: Mount fire extinguisher in truck, in reach of driver, comply with OHV recreation area rules, copy South American Surf location

What I did:
  • Halguard extinguisher
  • Drill holes in passenger seat track to mount plate

Can't see it very well, but from the look of the head and nozzle you got an Amerex Halotron?

Its a Halotron yea, by Halguard. Went with this brand just because its black and less visible (I know you don't want less visible, but chances are me or my passenger is using it and know its there).

Fits pretty well mounted to the seat with the provided bracket.

Halguard is one of many rebranded extinguishers made by Amerex. I was just looking at the extinguisher itself and the head looked to be an Amerex. You got a very quality extinguisher. Excellent choice.

Your location makes it very visible and easily accessible in my opinion. Much better than a lot of installs that I see.

Cool, thanks for the feedback. The location I stole from the Brazilian model surf.

had shop replaced injectors and cleared misfire on cylinder 5. Cylinder 6 has a pretty bad VC gasket leak. I did the gasket when I did the SC a year back, but looks like something went wrong. The bolts are super loose again as well.

Put on the WM rack and the $90 ebay bar, happy with it after taking a spin at local forest road. I have to make a couple adjustments yet, then it'll be done. Hood glare isnt bad as mounted, starts 6" beyond the hood scope. I have to move the rack forward 6" so that'll get it off most of the hood.

Wired up Cobra CB and ICOM radio and also moved the CB mount. The GF made the small bracket for the cb. Strong magnets hold on the handsets.

ICOM radio in the ashtray spot. ICOM supplied mounting is with same strong magnets, so I bent a piece of steel and put in where the ashtray ways. Nice to have a HAM fit in the ashtray slot.
