Brit just arrived in US about to buy T4R need advice

Hi all... nice forum

I am about to buy a 2002 Black SR5 T4R... 138,000 miles and in fairly good condition... the guy wants 10k off the lot.

Am I gonna run into problems with this model and do any of you know what is a fair price? Is 138,000 miles too high for this model or do these things go for ever? Are there any problems that I should specifically look for?

Sorry about these probably stupid questions but the cars here are different to Europe and I feel a bit lost and don't want to get ripped off.

mileage is good, not sure on the price, kinda depends on the condition/options and where you are buying... etc.

no glaring issues with the 2002, do a search on the forum for pink milkshake, all automatic 4runners are better off with an aftermarket tranny cooler, but thats about all you are gonna have to worry about as far as most 4runners go. If its in good shape with good maintenance records 10k$ might not be a bad deal depending on the trim level/ options etc.

I can't answer your questions, but the default answer around here is, 'no-way bro! 138k is JUST broken in!', but you have no idea who the previous owner was. I say have a mechanic check it out first, just to air on the safe side. But, generally the 3rd generation 4runner is incredibly solid.

Trim is on this page Auction Cars LLC - Inventory its the only T4R they have for sale.

I took it for a AAA 86 point inspection and they said the Transfer case was seeping, and valve cover gasket seeping also throttle body was dirty... it drives nice and only had minor cosmetic damage... stone chips etc etc.

Also the undercarrage/chassis is kinda rusty... It was registered in UT and then went to AZ before being sold at auction here in SoCal.

Again sorry for the noob questions but I am paraniod about getting a lemon!

Why is it now $8,900? you indicated he wanted 10K off the lot, I would definitely run the CARFAX.

If it's been regularly serviced there's not much to worry about - though if you are worried about it then have a toyota mechanic with 4Runner experience take a look.

I didn't have a 2002 but on my 2000 the only expensive fix was when the cat.converter went bad and had to be replaced - though in defense of the converter the truck had been sitting for a bit and I could well have been suckered in by a faulty 02 sensor.

Other than that, I'd make sure it's had its water pump and various belts changed - the usual.

I personally think that 10k is a bit high for a 2002 SR5 (I wouldn't say that if it was a Limited) but if you like the truck and there aren't many of them in your neck of the woods then it's not a dealbreaker.

138k may seem like a lot of miles when coming from a british market - but really in the US it's not much at all when you figure we do a lot more freeway/long distance driving here compared to the stop/start stuff in the UK. Less wearing on the vehicles.

Price seems very steep for an 8 year old car with 138k. You can find better deals private party (craigslist or something) just make sure to do due dillegence in inspecting it. Shop around, it will pay off big in the end. :cheers:
