Barn/Shop/Tom cats do the trick for us.
We had a severe Norwegian Wharf rat problem (size of small dogs) twenty years ago.
They have been greatly reduced and are kept in check by the cats.
Now it's just dealing with Racoons, Skunks and Possums.

I once worked with a person who at one time worked at a chicken processing place in Michigan. He said no part of the chicken was thrown out. Somebody wanted all parts of it. He was in equipment maintenance and said that if you had to weld any parts near the chicken parts it smelled like you were grilling chicken.
Just recently had a bit of a rat problem with the wife's 4th gen 4runner. Found a dead rat under the seat and a nest in the air cabin filter. Cleaned it out and now check her rig regularly for critter turds. Had a mouse use my blower motor for a nest in a Nissan pick up. Got in the truck and it was hot, so turned on the AC on high. What a mess--and the stench. No issues with critters at my Havasu house, but they are a problem at other house. I put out poison and traps and have a pest control agency that has the big poisen trap/trays around house and garage. Seems to help a lot.

Sorry I missed your post. Had a house there for going on 6 years. We love it. Let me know if you want to hit some trails. I usually wheel the FJ.

My new 4runner is not set up to do anything but easy trails right now with no lift. My old 03 4runner I did not mind beating more and it had the lift for clearance over the rocks and with its age I did not care about damage as much. I am really only good for graded fire road type trails at this point. My only mods so far are my KO2 tires and rci gas tank skid plate. It is kind of useless in the desert without more clearance on real trails. I have been out on the atv with a friend on the northwest side of town all day in the area that closes after January 1st for lambing season. I pretty much use the atv for everything around town and use the 4runner more for fireroads around Flagstaff, Alamo road etc. You would get pretty board wheeling with me with your FJ. A lift may be in the works after the 1st of the year depending on wife's approval. My 4runner is the only vehicle we own so I can not beat it to bad.

My question is, did the mouse or rat have liability insurance. :boom: :banana:
I hope this hasn't already happened to my truck. I'm finding rat droppings below the truck in the garage. If I have rats inside it's because they hopped on while I was parked at my favorite trail. I'm setting traps under the car with peanut butter in hopes that I can kill him on the floor before he dies somewhere in the truck. :gun4:

Well, it worked. I got a dead rat in a trap on the garage floor today. There were a few droppings under the car on the garage floor below the firewall. I can't be sure if it's the rat that was in the car or if it was drawn in from the outside by the smell of peanut butter. The garage door has enough of a gap in it that rats could get in. The 1913 garage is detached with an old-style swing up hinge, springs and gaps on both sides. So I'll keep two traps under the car for a few more days and watch for droppings.
I have not cleaned out the cabin filter, but that's next. I need to look for telltale signs that a rat has been there.

Rodent damage is very common. Due to environmental standards the insulation on wire has to be able to decompose over time and the color comes from a soy based due. Not only do they literally get nutrition from eating the insulation but they sharpen their teeth by chewing on the metal strands.
I worked on a car a handful of years back. It was brand new S4 that sat at the airport for an long weekend, they came back and to a no start. Towed it in to the dealer and I checked it all out. The total was an $8,500 insurance claim. Rodents ate the engine harness, transmission breather, intake pipes, coolant lines, a fuel line, vacuum lines, and even the rubber grommet on the steering shaft where it seals to the firewall.
