broken cv after lift, what do I need

Well as usual I started by searching but wasn't able to find what I needed and Im kind of in a pinch. So yesterday I installed the equivalent of a 2 inch lift from toytec. This is the kit I used. So this afternoon I was out flexing the suspension and doing some pretty mellow crawling and all was well. The new suspension was working great. I then went to cross a small ditch that had me flexed to full droop in opposite corners (front driver and rear passenger) and I was turned full lock to the right. I started climbing out of the ditch when I heard a click click ping sort of thing. I then backed down and looked under the car to see the driver side outer cv joint had grenaded itself and the inner boot was leaking grease :frusty:

So Im already in the prcocess of replacing the half shaft with a remaned oem one but my main issue is figuring out what I need to do to prevent this in the future since this rig will see more situations like this and a broken shaft every time is no fun and because I did this same obstacle several times with stock suspension and never had a problem. Overall I am sitting at 2 inches of lift front and rear, so do I need to add limit straps in the front, diff drop, or something else? Any help is greatly appreciated and Ill post up pics of the damage once they upload.

unfortunately there is not a lot to do to prevent what happened. Stock cv's with 150k+ miles will break when fully drooped and turned under power. The way to be prepared is to have a spare cv for when these things happen. The save your pennies and some day buy RCVs or Lotus Axles. Keep wheeling this is part of the fun :plane::plane::guitar3::guitar3:

Buy a Wrangler... lol, jk, love my 4runner compared to my solid axle jeeps. I've replaced 2 half shafts on my rig as well. Newer ones will def help. And if u wheel a lot. Spare doesn't hurt along side your jack.

Do you guys think adding a diff drop would help since I have a fairly mild lift and it would almost be returning my angles to stock?

I dont think itll hurt to try it since it wont break the bank. When i put mine i didnt really notice too much of a difference. I still had a boot rip with my original oem cvs at 170k. Just put brand new napa cvs and will reboot my oems for trail spares if needed.

IMO, dff drop really doesn't change the angle all that much. I don't think these CV axles like to play nice at full turn lock under power especially if your flexed. Your driving habits might make the most difference. Maybe your CV was on its way out already and that situation made it pop. I always cringe when having to turn a large amount when offroading because of this situation.

I have the same thought after looking at some pictures but if its just an hour or so of time to make the blocks then it's probably worth a try.

It very well could have been because when I was in the snow and the wheel was slipping I could hear an feel a slight clunking in the front.

Right now Im just replacing the broken one with a remaned autozone one and Ill pick up a spare first chance I get. In the future Im going to pay more attention to the steering angle and probably add a limit strap setup like what Dirtco and BFAD have on their rigs to keep it from over extending because I feel like it might be doing that. How would I go about checking if thats the case?

So it seems like Im not out of the woods yet with this. After I replaced the axle im finding that the issue is much worse than i originally thought because it doesnt matter what way the wheels are turned, the front cvs are binding like crazy when they are at full droop (audible clunk that can also be felt in the floor)
If anyone else has run the toytec adjustable bilstein 5100s and has found a solution please let me know. I feel like it is the shocks traveling too far because the front is drooping almost 4 inches. I have actual measurements but would have to look for the piece of paper. IF anyone has an idea of what to do please let me know.

Could you please give us a measurement from center hub to fender ? Make sure you are actually out of 4wd just Incase. I never had an issue of breaking CV after my lift. Only torn boot. And mine aren't even OEM. If you are more then 3" upfront then bring it back to 3" or little less.

sitting on a flat surface measured from center of hub to lip of fender flare.
Driver side ride height: 22 inches
Passenger side ride height: 22 inches
Driver side droop height: 24.5 inches
Passenger side droop height: 25 inches

Measuring from ground to fender flare before and after the lift it is exactly two inches higher in all four corners

Figured Id throw these up for entertainment purposes

so I was looking the forum and one member said their stock 99 is 21.5" up front.
You got .5" lift ????

I'm scratching my head as to why your CV is like. I had my truck flexed LIKE A MOTHER F and I'm good are you sure you have it installed correctly ? And wheel alignment?

I installed OME 906 coils in the rear and the truck is setting level with the front set where it is. My before and after measurements confirm I have exactly 2 inches of lift all around. As far as I know I installed it correctly. It was pretty straightforward. What if anything can be easily messed up. I also have not gotten an alignment yet because I haven't sorted out this issue with the CVS. The truck has some obvious camber but tracks straight. I'll be getting it aligned after I solve the cv issue.

Looks like OP has 1" of lift ? Hmmmm and OP are your CV only binding at drop ? Maybe you need limit straps ? But I'm still confused why your cv is like that with barley any lift. I have 3" lift and no issues. And most members to. Post some pics of your suspension of both sides. Double check your bolts very carefully. Sorry maybe other members can help you

Stock 99's are exactly 21" hub to fender

If this is a 99 with tall coils then that makes perfect since because I should be 2 inches above a stock 98 which is 1 inch shorter than a 99 with tall coils.

Hmmmm and OP are your CV only binding at drop
Correct, I only bind at droop.

Here are my cv angles at ride height. If someone with a three inch lift could post pics of their angles at ride and droop with measurements that would be awesome

I also talked to my local offroad shop today and he said that if you are going to run a full coilover kit like the one i have you need limit straps because the shocks dont have the internal limiter set in a position that will work with the 4runner cvs. He also asked if anyone was running drop spindles but I said not that I know of, all I have seen are diff drops. When I asked where I should set the limit straps to he said to set the droop equal to the up travel.

So Im in the process of getting the SS strap mounts and all the other things I need and we will see if the straps fix the problem.
It just seems weird that toytec would sell a kit that would need limit straps to actually work but Ill have to call them tomorrow and see what they say.

Those cv look like a good angle. I'll take a pic of my suspension. But not a drop pic. Can't drive ( broken wrist )

Curious when you installed the coil over conversion. Did you need to install the black perch and on what setting is the black perch on?

I think it's normal for the CV to be like that when your flexing honestly.
