Any 3/4 shackle that is designed for vehicle recovery should be fine. I wouldn't go with a random one in a bin at Harbor Freight or Tractor Supply.
Most of mine are ARB, but I know Warn, Smittybuilt, and tons of others market them as well.

So I am getting ready to buy a winch and drop it on the tray. It has come done to wanting a superwinch talon 9.5 or a warn zeon 10. Still need to do some measurements to see if there is enough room for that bulky superwinch solenoid or if I can relocate the zeon solenoid. Any input here is appreciated
My biggest question is what has everyone done with the power steering line that runs through there? At least it looks like it is attached to the power steering pump, the larger dark colored horizontal line, connected to rubber hose sections at the ends. All of the pics I have come across, I can't see in any detail behind the winch.

The line is hooked to flexible connectors on the sides and for me it flexed behind the winch and leans on the passenger side of the winch solenoid mount only without being in the way whatsoever. I also just had the bumper skin off over the weekend and checked things out and it is holding up without a problem after a few weeks of driving.
If you want to look up the size of my winch and compare it to what you are looking at, I put in a "Smittybilt XRC-9.5K Waterproof Winch Gen2". The winch and the control box fit in there on the passenger side without any modification except for a small rectangle cutout in the metal mounting bracket that goes from headlight to headlight.
Check out a pic from my install below. If you want some more pics shoot me a PM (just so I get an email) and I'm happy to go out to the garage and pop off the plastic cover and take some shots for you so you can see how that line ended up behind the winch.
Also, ignore my retarded mounting of the light mounts. I figured it out and fixed them shortly after taking that picture.

You can get any you like, more than likely they will be totally adequate.
Myself, from my old ski lift maintenance days we used Crosby shackles, true rigging. When you see big shit break you will know why. They are a little bit more expensive but all are individually tested, lift rated, and strength to spec. so no surprises. They will even certify them if you like if you are OCD
The 3/4" 4.5 ton are about $30 a pop, and about $9400+ less than getting a extremity reattached. Man thanks for that! I think just even a bigger pic of the one you took would be more than adequate. I am wondering about the "metal mounting bracket" if it is what I think it is I have some lights just behind my grill mounted to that.

in fact I just started today, the silly Talon solenoid is f'n huge, I would have had it done today if I didn't have to move it. Going to move it to the driver side of the winch, hoping against the plastic shroud. Second pic as it sits now.Attachments

I would move it into the engine bay. My front camera is mounted at about the same height, and it goes into submarine view more often than I would have thought. A sealed contactor might be OK, but open solenoids are asking for trouble.No worries, thanks again

Thanks for the advice. I would love too except I haven't got any room for it! Stupid smog box, a 31agm battery in the stock location, a ARB twin in the pass side behind the air box, and switches/breaker box behind the fuse box. not much real estate in the 2013
This superwinch claims to have a sealed/submersible solenoid. Believe me I would rather put it somewhere else. I am still thinking about it, I haven't committed to putting it there. I might just tear it out of the supplied box and make my own. I got the long relocation kit so I got 6 feet to work with.

I realize I'm digging up an OLD thread here, but this is relevant to my current situation and potential purchases. After my recent trip to Red River Gorge solo, I've determined that a winch and beefier springs that provide a bit of lift are in order, in case I get into a hairy situation that needs recovery (almost did in a deep mud pit that was up to the rockers/bottom of door). More specifically this lift: 3" FJ Lift w/ front & rear coils
The Engo winch linked above seems to be a good value and has good reviews from what research I've done. It seems the only potential issue will be relocating the solenoid. Has anyone done the Budbuilt mount on a '10-'13 with this exact winch?
EDIT: it seems the E9000S has been replaced with a newer model- http://store.engousa.com/p/model-sr9s
This new design may make relocating the solenoid more difficult....or possibly not necessary.....? Anyone?

Man if your doing RRG all by yourself you for sure need a winch. I spent a weekend out there with some tacoma guys and luckily most had winches cause that place is trouble some, especially when you go off trails that are not on the map anymore.
I havent heard anything bad about Engo and with that price you should go for it.
I have the BudBuilt hidden winch mount on my 2016 LE and I spent some time researching winches before I made my decision and I'll share my thoughts. I spent a lot of time chasing down reviews and calling manufacturers to try and get an idea of responsiveness for potential issues (warranty and otherwise). I didn't want to initially but ended up buying the Warn ZEON 10-S almost entirely because of how they stand behind their product and support it long term. They make a great product and it's at a premium price point but to me it was worth the extra money because of how they stand behind their product.

We started in Slade and went out by the Nada tunnel and Bypass Creek Rd. which is literally a creek. North of the diamond is where it got a bit worrisome being solo.
While I agree, it's not always easy to talk myself into spending top dollar.

Hey everybody I haven’t posted in probably over a decade but I’m still here LOL! Reviving a very old thread here. I just discovered an issue with mine. I have had the Budbuilt hidden mount for about a year with a 12k OVS winch, and have used it a lot. It has been awesome, but…I am now realizing that it is not designed in a way that it can properly attach to the actual frame. At least not a strong enough part of the frame. Mine has caused the whole front end to pull down and you can see the tops of the crash brackets breaking. My plan is to source some new brackets and then have a local welder add reinforcement brackets on each side of the BudBuilt plate that are solidly connected to the sides of the actual truck’s frame near the sway bar bushing mounts. I uploaded an image. Tough to do on my iPhone. Has anybody else has this happen?
