I thought I would finally start my build thread on here. I’ve been a member for around five years but never got around to it until now. It’ll be a long process, but we’ll see how it goes. Hope everyone enjoys and finds some of the information useful!

P.S. Many know me on Instagram as Duskrunner.03…still trying to figure out profile name change on here

The Origins of the Build

Once upon a time, I bought a 2003 Toyota 4Runner Sport in the flavor of V8 and 2WD. It was my first car at 15 years old and I ironically hated it at first. The only thing I could think about was how much of a mom car it was…and now here we are eight years later with tons of time, money, parts, adventures, and friends invested because of this truck. This is the only picture I have from those high school days before I even knew you could modify these things and that they had such a cult following.

Just a Taste of Mods

My first year in college, I saw a lifted 4th gen for the first time. No armor, no lights, or roof rack. Just a clean lifted 4Runner on upsized tires (probably 33s). At first, I decided to only have a front leveling spacer put in to raise the front up some (first pic). Then I slowly began the snowball effect of adding mods. 265/70/17 cheap ATs came next.

I wanted a tire carrier so bad but couldn’t pay for a full bumper. I “built” my own out of various hitch parts and it was a disaster, but my disaster nonetheless (second pic).

Not even a year after having the leveling kit installed, I decided to research into installing a lift and running bigger tires. The lift I ended up getting was the Bilstein 5100s with Old Man Emu 885 springs up front and Wheelers T12 springs in the rear. I also added a 1/4” spacer front and 10mm trim packer rear (both on drive side) to account for driver side lean. My inspirations were Momo.75 and T4R_Juan for the most part.

I was a college student for most of my build, so I learned to save money but teaching myself to do mecanik things. When I first installed my lift, I barely knew how to change a tire. The install was a success though! This is what sparked my whole interest in completing 95% of my own work.

Wheeling? What’s That?

After developing a social network with other Toyota and offroad people, I was eventually invited to go to Lonestar Toyota Jamboree by some people local to my area. Rushingman (4R), Nathan (Taco), and I began our five hour trip as basically total strangers and returned home good friends. This weekend really opened my eyes to the world of modified Toyotas and the Toyota community, and I even got to “wheel” my 2WD (nearly rolling it). I was hooked.

Our group returned home from LST and created Arkansas Toyotas. We ran that for a few years hosting meets and working with sponsors for our events, but life got busy as it always does. We’re still the best of friends though!

Maintenance is Key

I have spent a lot of time completing maintenance on this thing. I try to keep up but I also drive a self/
-proclaimed sh*tbox. Just some of the things I have completed maintenance wise are engine fan, suspension bushings, balljoints, tie rods, brakes, fluids, wheel bearings, ujoints, valve cover gaskets, spark plugs and coil packs, air filters, oil changes, you name it.

Here are just a few pictures:

Little by Little

I also completed some smaller mods outside of general maintenance. GoGettaGrip shifter, 1” wheel spacers, ParaHandles, black headlights, cheap looking roof basket, plasti-dip, tint, radio and speakers, and drawer system.

I think by far the best thing I have ever done to my 4Runner has been the drawer system. I keep all my tools, fluids, spare parts, hardware in there so it’s always with me.

Is Bigger Better?

Well when I first lifted it and put on 265/70/17s (32s), I told myself I would be happy with that settup. That I wouldn’t go over the top with it. Less than a year after mounting those, I swapped to running 285/75/17s (34x11.50) and installed a 1” body lift.

My Falken Wildpeak AT3Ws have far surpassed my expectations. Amazing grip in all conditions, long life, aggressive look. I also picked up some used cheapo Trailmaster wheels from a friend. I’ll just say, Discount Tire is awesome haha.

Front End Friday

When looking to buy a bumper, I always loved the idea of a tube bumper with a center skid, much like the desert style ones. Nobody offered these though and I wanted to make sure I could mount a winch and that it would hold up well to damage from deer, trees, other vehicles, etc. I found the Pelfreybilt hybrid bumpers for the 2nd gen Tacomas and really liked them. The only problem was that nobody made hybrids for the 4th gen 4Runner.

I talked to Brandon at Coastal Offroad for weeks looking at the blueprints and about the viability of ordering only the center section, then having tube wings bent and welded up. We tried it and it worked flawlessly. I ordered just the center section, no wing plates and no top plate. My fabricator cut and bent and welded up some wings, cut a new top plate, and added some plates for mounting marker lights. I ended up spraying the bumper with primer and it’s been like that for three years now. I like that it’s not pristine and has scratch marks and a little bit of surface rust. I don’t want my 4Runner to be a show truck, I want it to be functional rather than perfect looking.

I figure it went pretty well cause after I did that, Coastal Offroad started offering just the center sections in order for customers to make custom hybrids. You’re welcome

At the same time, I also had ordered some FiberwerX fiberglass fenders so that I could have the wings made to match the lines perfectly. I had to fit and trim and drill the mounting for the fenders which took an afternoon to get it right. I sprayed the fenders in spraycan bedliner to match my cladding which had already been sprayed with the same stuff. I later sprayed the hood as well.

Solving the Open Intake Problem

In the Ozarks, there’s a lot of water crossings, especially in the spring. Some come up to the bottom of your frame rails, so can go up over your hood. There’s a reason the majority of trail rigs in the area run snorkels, although sometimes it’s only for looks haha.

With fiberglass fenders like both Rushingman and I had, there is no more plastic fender liner and the intake is open to the elements. We wanted to solve this issue since we are constantly doing water crossings.

The snorkels on the market are formed to fit the shape of your factory fender. Fiberglass fenders are much wider and don’t retain the same shape at all, so the normal snorkels don’t work with them.

Rushingman found a guy in Omaha, Nebraska (7 hours away) that had a good portfolio of diverse fabrication projects. He bought 4” thin wall stainless pipe with various bends and we drove to Omaha for the weekend to have it created. We were both nervous how it would turn out since fiberglass is somewhat easily damaged and is expensive. When it was done, we were glad that he had made the decision to get the stainless snorkel added. The biggest thing I remember was when we first got on the interstate, you could really hear the sound of the intake through the stainless pipe. It was sexy af.

I chose to go a cheaper and simpler route. I was still in college so I made my own rubber fender liners. These are not watertight, but do protect from splashback. I used 1/4 rubber stall mat which I cut to shape, then mounted it using L brackets to the subframe of the engine bay. Not perfect, but better than nothing. They spanned the entire width of the fenders from the door hinges to the headlight. For $100, I’ll take it.

Arkansas Toyotas

We hosted a few meets for offroad Toyotas to come out and visit with other enthusiasts and see awesome trucks with all their mods and for a chance to win some discount codes, merch, and other things from our sponsor companies. It was great but life gets busy so they kind of died off and got quiet*♂️
