Bulletproof A340F Transmission?

I'll play devil's advocate and say no for mine at 125,000, but that is due to the previous owners towing a 20ft boat with OD on all the time for the first 60,000 miles. And this is something I expected in the future back in 2006 when I bought the 4runner.

Aisin makes some great transmissions. I'd probably rank them right behind Allison as far as durability goes.

The OP gets great service out of his due to all the Liqui Moly liquids it has been subjected to over the years.

Oh...the ghost of Little Caesar rises again while "hatin on LiquiMoly products" LOL. I like the way you take jabs at me buddy.....no problem.

Seriously, I am OCD about PM on everything about my truck. If I die, I plan to be buried in my truck (Yes, I love it that much)

With respect to the tranny (No...not talking about Caitlyn Jenner here...) just do above and beyond what might be "minimal"....for example:

1. Use a high quality synthetic transmission fluid. (Mobil1 Synthetic ATF in my case)
2. Bypass the radiator and put in a quality AT cooler.....
3. Drain and fill at least once a year
4. Install a MAGNEFINE filter and replace every 30-40K

And in respect to Little Caesar, crawl under your rig and rub some LiquiMoly on the whole transmission housing and celebrate with a cold beer afterwards.....works wonders! (Forgive the sarcasm folks......LOL)

Sadly at the moment BamaDrewski I am losing ATF I believe through a old hose coming from the external cooler. But it has been too hot outside to inspect so I have just been topping off the tranny once a week. At least it is receiving new fluid somehow.

Liqui Moly in the right applications works well. A friend's wife has a 2006 BMW that was losing oil due to bad valve seals. He added a can of Motor Oil Saver along with the new oil when he changed the oil. He went from adding a quart a 1000 miles to one quart every 4000 miles. So yea, it works, I know.

only 193,000 miles so far

new rad and added a remote trans cooler

was flushed twice so far.

shifts smooth, no slip, and works well.

also have 32's on it.

201k on my original one before the TC went out.

137k and counting on the swapped one.

The 2000-2002 trucks seem to be more prone to TC failures than earlier trucks. IIRC, you and I were swapping out transmissions around the same time. My 2000 suffered a TC death at 151k with good maintenance. Luck of the draw.

I remember that. Mine was neglected by the PO. Although, not really his fault but the shop that stripped the drain bolt causing it to lose most of the fluid.

Good times! I'm hoping this tranny lasts as long as I own the 4runner.

in regards to the 340F, is it better than the 340E? i remember seeing and reading something about swapping one for the other.

IIRC, I was in the middle of a 1500 mile run and the torque converter started unlocking/locking constantly at highway speeds. Annoying as hell but not the end of the world. Wasn't sure exactly what was causing the TC to lock/unlock repeatedly – until it threw a tranny solenoid code for the TQ. Oh and I also noticed that there was a certain delay in down/up-shifting under certain conditions such as slowing down for a red light and then before coming to a stop, the light turns green and you begin to accelerate but there would be a slight delay before acceleration.

Figured since I was going to replace one solenoid, I would just replace all three while I was up in there at the high milage I was at.

Swapped all three out, cleaned the strainer, pan and magnets then flushed with 16qts Valvoline Maxlife and haven't had any issues since.

Pan and magnets before & after. Note the magnet material after about 350,000 miles. Not too shabby me thinks...

Absolutely! Wow, that's clean at 350K MILES! I'm thinking about dropping the pan this Fall. I had a complete fluid flush 2 years ago with synthetic but I suspect it had NO servicing possibly 17yrs before that! It is running fine, but the key to keeping it that way, is maintenance!

I think dropping the pan and inspecting the magnets while cleaning it all out is a fine way to get a better idea of the general condition of the transmission. As I understand it, a lot can be learned from what is stuck to those magnets along with how the strainer looks.

I swapped my solenoids out last night and it took a little under 2 hours. I had to keep going back inside my house (I was trying to play hookie from work so I had to take calls) so it took me longer than it should have. The steps are straight forward: drain trans and let it drip for an extra 10-15 mins while you prep, drop the pan bolts (10mm), drop the filter (12mm), unbolt and pull the solenoids (12mm and 8mm), unplug old solenoids, plug in new solenoids and bolt back in, bolt back in filter, clean pan gasket surface, bolt pan back up.

Tips - I found that a dab of orange gasket tube on each corner works great for holding the rubber gasket in place. Be careful with the torque on the bolts - this is aluminum and strips. A roll of paper towels and safety glasses is a good idea because the transmission will drip ATF the whole time you are working on it.

I am bringing up this older thread. I am in search of the Toyota transmission solenoid part numbers. Does anyone have these? I have an A340F transmission in my rig - 3.4L, T4R, LTD, 4WD

I don't have the part numbers, although, I do have a spare set of these lying around. I got the ebay/amazon ones that I think street creeper suggested in a thread. I installed them on my 150k trans and after putting new fluid it, it toasted itself. I turned around and got a 250k trans for $100 and its been good for the last almost 40k miles. I pulled the solenoids from my old trans before scrapping it. If you're interested in a used set (maybe 100 miles), I'll glady rummage through my parts box and we can figure out the pricing.

It sounds like these transmissions are pretty well built. My 88 however, has around 200k miles and is leaking a ton of fluid from the breather at the top. I think it may be getting hot? Runs just fine, fluid smells good, filter recently changed. I have no idea why it leaks. Literally a gallon in forty five miles. Also, I looked all over forums and can't find any info on how to check transmission codes.

264k on my guy and its almost eerie to me with how well it's behaving! I plan to put a cooler on it soon because with the Torque app, the temps tend to soar to 230F around the hills of OR without much extra weight in the vehicle. Granted, that was during a 90F day, but I'd rather keep things happy for peace of mind.

Turn off OD if you are going over 45mph in the hills. If you are offroading and going slow, use 4LO. Both will drop trans temps significantly.

I saw that on the TTTM tranny flush video and tried it out this weekend... I was not expecting that big of a drop, lol. By the time it donned on me to check the temp was at 240! As soon as I hit the O/D off button it dropped to around 220 and never got higher.
