bumper choices - or the lack of...

OK, I do not know if it is just because I am new and dont yet know where to look or who to ask but I have spent the better portion of two days searching for a winch bumper for my 91 t4r. I have found the*exact same $900+ ARB monstrosity at 2 dozen or so different websites and I have also found the same California pre-runner tube style frame piece of ugliness at another 2 dozen sites. What I have NOT found is a decent looking, all steel, winch mountable, includes shackle mounting brackets, simple friggin' bumper that does not cost more than the purchase price of my 20+ year old*truck!

if someone has a suggestion for me it would b GREATLY appreciated!

Plate bumpers are slim pickings. There are a couple different tube styles, but they all look similar - I don't know what you've found yet, but have a look at Addicted Offroad and 4xInnovations. Both are vendors on the forum and are very good shops with great reputations. TrailGear and Marlin Crawler also make good tube bumpers. CBI Offroad is working a weld-it-yourself plate bumper, but I don't know where they're at with that.

Or, get with a local fabricator and design your own. There's a lot of different winch plates out there that make good bases for a bumper project.
 
As kidv said, plate bumpers are slim pickings for 1st ans 2nd gen runners. Most people don't want to pay 800+ bucks for a plate bumper on a 2,000 dollar rig. So, most companies don waste their time on them. Even a local fabricator would be giving you a deal at 600 bucks for a plate bumper. If you're set on plate, be ready to pay the price (for the very few that are mass made) or have a local guy make one for you.
 
I have a TJM T17 bumper, it is about as simple as it gets for aftermarket plate bumpers that can support a winch.
 
I have a local friend who's itching to fabricate something for me in exchange for some computer help I gave him a while back.

If he's going to fabricate me a plate bumper for my 1994, what does he need to know? Should he just make it match up with the holes on the frame where my current brush guard (came with the vehicle I bought used) is installed? I suppose I should have the winch beforehand so he can match that up also?

I assume I can't attach a winch to the current brush guard/damage multiplier, it feels pretty flimsy.

Definitely not this ^^^
There are a few places that sell the winch mount plate that makes a good place to start a front bumper fab. I can't think of the place right now but a quick search will find it (probably in the vendors section here).
And yes, it should affix right to the frame rails (bolt or weld).

Yeah, you DEFINITELY don't want to mount a winch bumper the same way those simple brush guards are mounted--one pull, and "hasta la vista, baby"! And you MOST DEFINITELY don't want to just mount the winch to one of those things, either--might as well put it on with bungee cords (LOL). I'd add more about where to find quality bumpers, but the guys have already covered the slim pickings pretty well.
