Bumper question

As far as the shrockworx vs arb comparison goes, both have their downsides. The shrockworx lead time is absolutely ridiculous. I own an arb and it is a very well made bumper with a lot of nice features that no other bumper has, such as the built in crumple brackets. However, the arb is an overland bumper. If you plan on doing hardcore wheeling, it's simply not suitable. The approach angle of it is terrible and the vertical edge along the entire bottom of the bumper causes it to hang up on obstacles. At about 80lbs, it's the lightest steel bumper on the market, but as a result, the side wings are very flexy and one corner of my front end is pushed up quite badly from the bumper flexing into it. But again, it is intended to be an overland bush bar that provides a good winch mount and protection from light impacts such as animal strikes. It's not meant to be smashed on in the rocks.

Is the ARB really only 80 lbs? I always figured it was a lot heavier, but maybe not. Must be made of thinner steel than the other large bumpers like it. Like JayRolla said the addicted off road is only 70 lbs which was a big reason I went with it. Today is the 6 week mark for me waiting for mine.

My local 4wheelparts has an Arb in stock. So I would save a huge chunk in money on shipping alone.

Arb offers free shipping quite often but yes picking up from 4wheel parts would save a lot of time!!!!!

I believe the ARB is 78 lbs. And yes, its made of thin metal. It's 1/8" or even thinner. It's more than enough for nice soft kangaroos but rocks are a different story.

Completely agree, ARB is way bulky and ends up getting hung up a lot.

That "protection" for the headlights/fender on Shrockworks, if that's what you're referring to, is purely cosmetic/aesthetic. Those little tubes aren't going to do any protecting of anything.

Most other bumpers are 100+ lbs, the addicted is the lightest by far. I believe the 4X with no headlight gaurds is 105 lbs. I didn't realize the arb was so thin, I always pictured it being a real thick burly bumper. Much better than stock I'm sure.

Those "little tubes" will do some protecting from trees and the like, even if you hit a reasonably sized deer they would help more than if you didn't have anything. Now if you plow into a moose at 70 mph you're screwed either way, but Shrockworks doesn't mess around with their stuff. It's all very solid.

Called CBI and got a quote. It will be $1565 shipped to my house. They have bumpers in stock. I was told it would be a week turn around for the powder coating. Also you get a $150 mail in rebate right now from warn for buying a winch.

I didn't have the 4runner version but had an nwti bumper on my 2nd gen Tacoma and loved it. I've been contemplating buying one for my runner in the next couple months. I like the look of their open top design

I've been looking into getting one as well since I occasionally used my old bull bar on my CR-V to plow through snow berms. And it saved my car once when I slammed into a hunting blind that flew off a trailer in front of me. I just with they weren't that pricey!

If you're willing to wait, I like the Addicted bumper more than Shrockworks, simply for the look of it. Both should be plenty strong.

If you want something "off the shelf" that you can get your hands on relatively quickly, ARB does the trick and is still a good quality bumper--just a little more plain jane IMO. Any one of these will go a lot better with a buddy helping out, or at least a cherry picker. We mounted my buddy's ARB with winch by hand (2 guys) and it was a bear!

Not true, a 80's/90's Saab 900 will protect you. They actually have moose impact testing in Sweden, which is part of why Saabs and Volvos had such high safety ratings compared to other cars on the road back in the day. My buddy's wife actually peckered an elk with her 900c convertible at 60mph on highway 36 between Boulder and Lyons and the car was still in remarkably intact condition. The hood hinges from the front and pops up in an impact, creating a shield that deflects the animal up and over the car. :llama:

I plan on to purchase a bumper soon. Trying to figure out if I want the shrockworks or Arb. Just want to get peoples experience on both quality and ease of installation. I plan on doing the install myself in the garage. Also can people tell me what winch they use with there bumper as well.

Any pics of your vehicle with the bumper would help. Just trying to figure out which one I want.

Since you are in CO I would check out Insain Fab. They make great bumpers, if you want an example of their work let me know and I will post it up. I am going to have them make me a bumper.

I initially wanted an AOR bumper, but people are waiting 20+ weeks for a bumper. That is way to long IMHO

You realize how little of the headlight and fender is covered by those little tubes, right? If one swung a baseball bat at the headlight where the tube isn't located how would it help? Same thing goes for the trees/deer/whatever else comes into contact with the headlight/fender.
