Burning brakes

I've gotten that weird burnt smell but that was because I had to almost panic stop while
My son was puking in the back seat. I didn't want him to be choking if I could help it.

As for overdriving a car. Every track event produces that wonderful burnt smell. My Hawk pads wreak after 20/30 minute sessions along with blue and purple heated rotors. It's part of the game and not uncommon to wear out a full set of pads and rotors in a weekend.

I think overdriving ends In A wreck and Watkins Glen's blue bushes aren't very friendly. Drive at your own limit.
 
All this track talk has me wondering....maby we should do a Trail track day. Meet at the Nürburgring, lockers must be engaged at all times. I'm sure we could burn something up....

I think you are wrong here, in general this forum is extremely helpful when you are in need or ask a real question.

Paraphrasing the OP post:

...........Drive Hard, Brake Hard, Heat up Brakes, Brakes Smell......

What is not normal or expected about what happened?
 
Drive down a mountain and ride the brakes.

Halfway down you won't be able to stop.

When you're coming down from Estes Park (or any mountain city) no one has their brake lights on.

You have a largely well educated and experienced group of people here who have forgotten more about 4Runners than most people will ever know.

You say stupid shit like I am driving my 4Runner like a Porsche 911 and the brakes smell what do you expect? All I'll say to you is "Duh".
 
From the searching I've done...turns out it prob wasn't the brakes at all. There are quite a few forums that talk about the mysterious burning smell coming from the rear wheel wells whenever a 4Runner is driven hard. Doesn't seem to be a concrete explanation. Perhaps, in between all the smartass remarks, someone has an answer.

And I didn't say I drove my 4Runner like a 911. Stop putting words in my mouth to make a point. I said I drove it hard on the back roads on my way to work. This is a tough, well built body on frame vehicle meant to withstand the rigors of hardcore off roading. The brief workout I gave my 4Runner on some smooth, paved back roads doesn't even compare to the stresses and strains that most people put their 4runners though off-road. What kind of workout does the 4Runner get when rock crawling, powering through deep sand, etc?

Many people have noticed the burning smell coming from the vehicle after having driven it hard.

That's what I was talking about earlier! And, for a change, I wasn't being a smartass!

The smell may not be just your brakes, or your brakes at all.

Easy enough to test. With vehicle warmed up, normal driving, just before you get home, punch it hard and hold it for a while. About a mile of hard throttle will more than do it. Easy on the brakes, pull into your garage, smell right rear fenderwell. You'll smell it if you did it right. Not brakes, somewhat like a burnt rubber smell.

C'mon Chris, now you are just showing off lol. On a side note, you don't even have to drive the 4Runner hard to get that smell and as far as I can tell it is not easily repeatable. Sometimes it happens, sometimes not. Sort of like diffeq.
 
Tough crowd...

My 4R is brand new, and I have noticed this smell from my left rear wheel-well. I figured it was something related to the "new car" smell burning off... Haven't noticed it much recently. Will have to keep a nose out for it.

There's nothing wrong with driving hard ffs. Just flick it over to sport mode and downshift a little more.
