Burning/poop/sulfur/buthole smell when accelerating?

as far as I know, they all do this. Don't know the reason or how to fix, but I'd like to know as well if there is a way. Mine does it as well, and the only fuel I use is Chevron premium, so I doubt it has much to do with fuel. I just remember to keep my rear window up when I feel the leadfoot coming :cheers:

roll the backwindow up. They all do it. You can reroute the exhaust to dump out behind the rear wheel and it wont be as bad, but dont worry they all do it. I thought mine was F**ked when I drove over the first hill with the back window down.
All I have found is people talking about the exhaust coming in the back window, but the smell in mine comes through the HVAC vents.

if you are smelling it with all the windows rolled up, you might have a cracked exhaust manifold. tons of threads on that as well.

The TSB is posted. Take it to your dealer they will replace the CATS for free if you are under 80K miles.

I had the brand new cats put on under the TSB and still had the issue, I was very dissapointed.

Every single car emits this odor under hard acceleration. You smell it in the 4R due to driving with the rear window down - which you're not supposed to do anyway.

I rarely drive with it down, but after getting the cats installed I had to check and sure enough it was still there.

Driving with the trunk open or in our case the rear window leads exhaust gases to come into the car. The car creates a vacuum as it moves through the air. Exhaust gases contain carbon monoxide.

Have you checked your cabin filter?
Remove the filter and shoot some compressed air or computer duster spray through the vent hole where the filter tray sits (make sure hood is open).
Replace with home furnace filters instead of expensive automotive "cabin air filters"
Works just the same.
You can find them at places like walmart in the heating/air conditioning section. Some larger ones can be cut into 4 even sections perfect for the 4runner cabin filter tray. Ends up being a couple bucks per filter.
I've had weird smells coming through the HVAC, the above steps fixed it.
