Busted Valve Cover

Dropped my rig off at the shop to get a new valve cover gasket installed since it was leaking oil pretty bad. Received a phone call a couple of hours later saying that one of their “newbie” mechanics over tightened the bolts causing the front of the valve cover to break. Apparently he didn't realize it broke because he started the 4Runner up and noticed oil seeping down the side and into the alternator. The place I go to is very reputable and they installed a new valve cover and new alternator free of charge (I only had to pay for the gasket kit). So word of caution, don’t over tighten the bolts on the valve cover!

That's awesome you got a new valve cover and alternator out of it; neither item is a cheap replacement.

I wonder if he broke it while torquing it to spec or not.

That is weird. I would think the bolt or hole would strip before the cover would crack. I guess it is pretty thin metal though.
